The Smart Energy and Resilience Analytics Lab (SERA Lab) at KFUPM focuses on advancing data-driven solutions to enhance the resilience and reliability of energy and networked systems. The lab leverages state-of-the-art analytics, machine learning, and optimization to tackle critical challenges, including:
Enhancing the resilience of energy, water, transportation, and logistics networks against cyber, climate, and operational disruptions.
Advancing predictive and adaptive analytics for integrated energy systems with high renewable and electric mobility penetration.
Optimizing smart energy infrastructures through data-driven modeling and decision support.
Enabling policy and planning through actionable resilience insights for infrastructure investment and regulation.
Embedding climate risk considerations into adaptive, low-carbon, and interconnected infrastructure system design.
Postdoctoral Fellows
Dr. Mahmoud Elkholy
M. H. Elkholy received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the Faculty of Engineering, Zagazig University, Egypt, in 2016 and 2019, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, University of the Ryukyus, Japan, in March 2025, where he also served as a visiting researcher. Since January 2026, he has been a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Smart Mobility and Logistics, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM),. He is also an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Zagazig University, Egypt. He has published more than 50 journal papers focusing on energy management systems, smart grids, and electric vehicle (EV) technologies, with particular emphasis on vehicle-to-grid (V2G) integration, EV charging infrastructure, coordinated charging/discharging strategies, and the application of artificial intelligence for optimal EV–grid interaction. His research interests include energy management systems, smart grids, EV integration and V2G frameworks, and artificial intelligence.

Dr. Yasir Naeem
Hafiz Muhammad Yasir Naeem received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Bahria University Islamabad, Pakistan in 2013, M.S. degree in control systems from University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Taxila, Pakistan, in 2016 and Ph.D. degree from the Capital University of Science and Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan in 2023. His research interests include energy-efficient optimization strategies for EVs using integrated route and speed planning, Model Predictive Control, Pontryagins Minimum Principle, Mixed Integer Linear Programming and Learning-Predictive control schemes. He joined the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Smart Mobility and Logistics at KFUPM as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in January 2026.

Saheed Afolabi
PhD Student
Mr. Saheed Afolabi is a PhD student and a Graduate Assistant (GA) at the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) Department at KFUPM and working at the SERA Lab. He recently completed his master’s degree in applied statistics at the same KFUPM, Saudi Arabia, with a distinction after his undergraduate and graduate program at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, with a first-class honour through National Diploma in Statistics at the Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State, Nigeria. He specializes in Optimization, Energy management system, Mathematical and Applied Statistics, and Machine Learning.

Mohammad Mynul Islam
PhD Student
Mr. Mohammad Mynul Islam Mahin is a PhD student in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at KFUPM, where he has been studying since January 2026. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Production Engineering from Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology in Dhaka, Bangladesh. His research interests include applied machine learning, socio-technical systems, predictive and prescriptive analytics, and decision science.

Ahmed Elasim Elhaj
Masters Student
Mr. Ahmed Elasim Elhaj is a Master's student at the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) Department at KFUPM. He has over five years of experience as a mechanical engineer, specializing in operations management, quality improvement, process optimization, and project coordination. With expertise in product design, QHSE standards, and Oil and Gas projects, he combines technical knowledge with strong problem-solving skills. Ahmed is passionate about enhancing productivity and quality in engineering projects and aspires to achieve full professional accreditation and advance into project management roles.
