Haryana Roadways buses remained off the road on Wednesday due to a strike by employees to protest the killing of a bus driver in Ambala earlier this week. The strike caused major inconvenience to passengers on Bhai Dooj.

The employees called off their strike Wednesday night after a meeting with Haryana Transport Minister Mool Chand Sharma in Chandigarh. After the meeting, the minister said normal services would resume from Wednesday night itself.

Haryana Roadways bus driver Rajveer, 51, died after he was attacked by unidentified assailants in Ambala Sunday night, police had said. Rajveer, who was on parking duty, was allegedly attacked by four to five occupants of a car following an argument.

An official release quoting Sharma said that the son of the driver would be given a government job on the basis of his qualification. He also said financial assistance would be given to the family of the driver.

Migrant labourer Ram Saroup, who had to go to Saharanpur to visit his sister's house to celebrate Bhai Dooj, said he waited for a bus near the Ambala Cantt bus stand but failed to get any. Later, he had to hire a private taxi at an exorbitant rate.

At the Karnal bus stand, a passenger rued that he was unable to get any roadways bus for going to Yamunanagar, while an elderly passenger said that because of the strike, the public was facing inconvenience.

The UT State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission has upheld an earlier order against Haryana Roadways in Chandigarh for deficiency in services as the state body had failed to arrange alternate transport for passengers, who were stranded after an accident in 2011.

The commission has dismissed Haryana Roadways appeal against the earlier order by the UT district forum,in which, the state transport body was directed to refund and provide a compensation of around Rs 18,000 to two complainants,Anveeksha and Verma Ravi Khokher, both residents of Chandigarh, who were on the bus on the day of incident.

Anveeksha Verma,an MBA at IIT Kanpur, claimed she had to reach Kanpur to join classes on September 9,2011 and had booked two Volvo Bus tickets for Rs 1,030 from Chandigarh to Delhi on September 7. On the way,as it reached the National Highway near Ambala, the bus was hit by a truck approaching from the same side. The driver and the conductor stopped the bus on the highway to check the damage. Meanwhile, another truck approaching from the same side did not see the stopped bus and rammed into it. Due the impact of the collision, the bus fell into a ditch causing the death of one passenger.

According to the complainants, they waited for sometime in the hope that the driver would arrange an alternative bus for the passengers, but no such arrangements were made. The two stated that they had to hire a taxi, from Ambala Cantt to New Delhi, for which, they paid a sum of Rs 3,375. They alleged that it was the duty of the Haryana Roadways officials to provide an alternative service to the passengers to enable them to reach their destinations in time, which they failed to do.

The commission observed that it was evident from the affidavit filed by the roadway officials, that the bus was parked in the middle of the road. The forum also said that there was no evidence to support the officials claim that the truck was speeding.

On alternative arrangements being made for passengers, the forum ruled that the roadways officials could not even produce the names of passengers on the bus. The commission hence ruled that the district forum was, thus, right in awarding compensation of Rs 10,000 to the complainants.

The complainants are to be refunded Rs 1,035 for the bus fare and the taxi fare of Rs 3,375. Additionally,Haryana Roadways has been penalised with Rs 10,000 as compensation for mental and physical harassment and litigation costs of Rs 3,100. 152ee80cbc
