Hundreds of thousands of people are fleeing the bombs. Mothers come, exhausted across our border with nothing but a bag or two, what money they could scrape together, and their children and grandparents.
All-day and all night they walk out of the border crossing area into Hungary.
Then, there they are, scores of people with food and water. Offering them places to stay. A country that says they can ride any bus or train for free, and live until the war ends.
Townspeople and churches from all around are bringing help by the van load.
Tents are set up to get in out of the wind and snow.
Cars are waiting to take people to the train or temporary shelters.
In the past few days since Russia's invasion, the world has changed.
Since every one of fighting age has been drafted, (all men 18 to 60 years of age) the refugees are women and children and a few elderly.
The churches have moved quickly to start feeding and housing people.
We have two more trucks and a van, loaded with food, blankets, water, diapers, medicine, etc. going out to the border crossing from Bonyhad church.
We have secured mattresses and two more buildings that we can outfit for housing. The ladies are pumping out food, both for those who are staying in the churches and to take out to people coming across the border. The ones who choose to go immediately to the bus or train station can at least have a good hot meal and what food and water they can carry.
The next step will be to help those who have no other options. They will need help filling out the asylum applications. The government has pledged to fast-track their applications and that will get them food stamps, medical cards, and housing, but the churches will be working to house and feed them until they get thru that process.
Anybody who wants to partner with us in this work is very welcome!
