Approximately 1 in 5 residents of Los Angeles face food insecurity, affecting more than 2 million individuals. Meanwhile, LA County discards 4,000 tons of food daily. In the United States, food waste generates twice the greenhouse gas emissions of commercial aviation, highlighting that tackling food waste could significantly aid in the fight against climate change. We are optimistic that FFLA will play a vital role in addressing these challenges and fostering a better future for our community.
Mane and Omid, two aspiring high schoolers were struck by the shocking level of food waste they witnessed daily. Realizing that countless individuals in Los Angeles struggle with hunger, they decided to take action. Together, they founded Harvest Hope LA, aiming to tackle both food waste and food insecurity in their community. Their vision is to expand this initiative throughout Los Angeles, making a meaningful impact for those in need.
Harvest Hope LA collaborates with local farmer's markets to rescue surplus food that would otherwise go to waste. Our volunteers deliver this food to individuals facing homelessness and food insecurity, donating everything to local food banks and shelters. We've recovered over 2,600 pounds of fresh goods and baked produce, significantly impacting our community. We’re committed to expanding our efforts and helping even more people in Los Angeles.
