Hi, I am Mr. Hartong and I'm your instructor for this course. I studied film and cinematic arts at California State University, Long Beach and earned a BFA in Digital Arts and Media. I own a film production company in Laguna Beach called Brett Royal Film, LLC. I have been working as a professional photographer and filmmaker for over ten years and absolutely love the industry.  I first began my filmmaking career as a wedding videographer and photographer, having filmed over 100 weddings and engagements. I have also edited and created many music videos, ESPN commercials, promotional videos, and several nominated short films. I really enjoyed creating and being part of The MTV Music Video and Movie Awards for many years and hope to inspire my students towards the same industry. I love playing guitar and toured nationally with my former band Uhoh! Explosion.  I enjoy cult classics, sports, and horror films. I find there are many parallels in film, music, and many other industries across the globe. 

As a CTE teacher I prepare my students to enter the industry with experience, hands on practice, and 21st century skills. My students have been nominated for Film Festivals and Photo contest across the nation, after only being in the classroom  for four months. I'm excited to grow the CTE program at Villa Park High School and help the community grow their artistic visions. 

Teaching future generations how to find their unique and artistic voices is my newly discovered passion.

The Design, Visual, and Media Arts pathway includes those occupations that use visual art, digital media, and Web-based tools and materials as the primary means of communication and expression.  In addition to an understanding of current workplace practice, this career pathway requires the development of knowledge and skills in both visual art concepts as well as new and emerging digital processes by which individuals are able to create and communicate complex concepts in a broad range of occupations and professions.
