Hi, I just turned 7 and love playing harp because it sounds like angels singing. Although I get blisters, I still feel calm. The pieces I chose to play are No. 1 from Marelles and Fengyang Drum Dance. Marelles No. 1 is a beautiful, calm, and soft piece. There is a lot of counting in this piece and with contrast dynamics which I enjoy doing very much. Fengyang Drum Dance is a traditional Chinese folk tune usually played during the Spring Festival (Chinese Lunar New Year) and my grandfather likes it.
2. Ada Whyte
I’m playing Chorale by composer Linda Wood Rollo. She has won the World Harp Congress Award of Recognition for Service to the International Harp Community. Linda currently lives in San Jose, California. When I play Chorale, it can be frustrating because I often get the same part wrong over and over again, but when I do get it right, it all clicks and feels extremely soothing.
3. Yothie Lo
I like cats and I have a golden British Shorthair cat named Muffin. I like to read books. I am in fifth grade and one of my favorite books is The Land Of Stories.
The songs I am going to play today are Judge's Dance. It is a Swedish song and it sounds happy.
4. Sofia Lui
Hello, my name is Sofia. I am currently age 9. I began playing the harp 3 years ago, as I was captivated by the sound it made and how fluent the playing of the harp was. After tremendous hard work, I was awarded second place in the USIMC 2023, and third place in the USIMC 2024. I hope to earn another award this year to showcase my talent and hard work. For this year’s SES, I will perform the "Ballade" composed by Susann McDonald, and the " Dragonfly in The Sunshine" composed by Carl Reinecke. I am filled with confidence that my playing and hard work will continue to pay off this year.
5. Veda Bharath
My name is Veda Bharath and I am 15 years old and in the 9th grade. I currently attend Evergreen Valley High School in Evergreen, San Jose. In addition to the harp, I have learned piano and the clarinet and I enjoy baking and swimming in my leisure time. This is my fourth year playing the harp and my first year participating in SES. The pieces I will play are Rêverie and Rouet from Trois Petites Pièces Faciles by Alphonse Hasselmans.
Alphonse Hasselmans (1845–1912) was a Belgian-born French harpist, composer, and teacher who played a crucial role in the development of modern harp technique. Rêverie and Rouet from Trois Petites Pièces Faciles are charming miniatures designed to develop both technique and expression. Rêverie, with its flowing arpeggios and gentle melodic lines, evokes a dreamlike, introspective mood. Rouet, meaning "Spinning Wheel," features repetitive, circular patterns that mimic the steady motion of a wheel.
6. Milana Rubio
Milana Rubio is 12 years old and in the 7th grade at Weston Elementary School in Ripon, a small town in California's Central Valley. She has played the harp for four and a half years as a student of Dominique Piana. She chose the harp because of its beautiful sound, and the idea of learning something new. She likes that it helps her build discipline and confidence. Milana also plays the piano and soccer.
Samuel O. Pratt (1877–1962) was an American harpist and composer known for lyrical, expressive works. The Little Fountain is an interesting piece that brings out a smooth yet vibrant flow of notes through rippling arpeggios and churning glissandos. Its elegant and dominant style conveys the harp’s beauty and power. A popular piece for advanced beginners, it displays both musical difficulty and imagination.
Johannes Snoer (1868–1936) was a Dutch harpist and composer known for his expressive and elegant harp music. Elfentanz (Dance of the Elves) is a lively piece that shows the playful movements of dancing elves or fairies. With rapid arpeggios and beautiful melodies, it brings out the harp’s unique versatility.
7. Swara DivyaPrithvi
Hello! My name is Swara DivyaPrithvi. I live in San Ramon and am currently 11 years old. I will have completed 4 years of harp lessons with Dominique Piana in July. I recently switched from lever harp to pedal harp. Before turning to the harp, I was trained in classical flute. I also practice Bharatanatyam, a South Indian Indian form of classical dance, which I’ve been learning for almost 7 years and performing across the Bay Area in various dance festivals.
Ballade, published in volume 2 of Harp Solos - Graded Recital Pieces, is a piece in A minor composed by Susann McDonald. It makes me think of bittersweet memories, given the feeling of chills produced by all those minor chords. At the same time, it also brings a kind of lightness of being, balancing the bitter with the sweet. It makes me think of the movement of water, rippling strongly yet softly, hopefully yet sadly. It is like the poem of life itself, mirroring the ups and downs experienced by every person in this world.
"Dance From One Blade of Grass To Another, Pearls of Dew" was chosen from the collection Haiku for the Harp, composed by Susann McDonald and Linda Wood Rollo. This piece evokes feelings of being surrounded by trees, hearing water softly rippling in the distance, trees rustling, grass swaying, the smell of rain, and the pleasing chirping of birds and insects. The harmonics represent the tender pearls of dew. It is inspired by the haiku of the title, written by the samurai Hattori Ransetsu (1654-1707). Ratsetsu developed as a haikai poet under the guidance of Matsuo Bashō, who was considered the greatest in the field during the Edo era. A haiku is a 17-syllable, miniature poem from Japan, written over three short lines. Ratsetsu is remembered for his diary entries that preserved his refined observations of travels in Southern Japan.

Brielle Tan is an eighth grader who has been studying the harp with Ms. Sonya Yu for over a year now. She loves the harp because of its soothing sound and rich tones.
Sonatina V is made up of two movements and is the fifth out of a collection of six sonatinas written by Jan Ladislav Dussek, a Czech composer from the classical period. Best known for his piano and chamber music, his compositions include a number of pianoforte sonatas and concertos, and a variety of chamber works for piano and strings. His collection of pieces was a significant representative of Czech music in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Esquisse, or Sketch, is composed by Henriette Renié, a prominent French harpist and composer known for her many unique and original pieces. In Esquisse, the composer uses the key of A♭ minor at the beginning and the key of A♭ major at the end, creating a contrast between moods. Renie uses the key change to create a contemplative and reflective quality. The contrast between the minor section and the major section are separated by a series of arpeggios that create a beautiful interlude between the gloomy beginning and the hopeful end.
9. Aaditya Amin
Aaditya Amin is twelve years old and in seventh grade. He started playing the harp when he was six years old. He plays the baritone saxophone as well in his school’s concert band and marching band. He is on his school’s team for archery and does swimming on the side.
The composer of Pistache is Bernard Andrès. Andrès was born in Belfort in 1941. He studied music at the Besançon Conservatoire, Strasburg Conservatoire, and the Paris Conservatoire, where he won the First Prize for harp. He has taught in many establishments around Paris and published several teaching works for the harp. He holds a musing teaching certificate and an ‘Aptitude Certificate’ for teaching the harp in French regional conservatoires. Since 1969, Bernard Andrès has been a soloist for the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France while also being a composer for harp, choir, orchestra, and chamber ensembles.
Pistache is written A-Oriental-Minor. The intro is full of eight notes, triplets, sixteenth notes, and sextuplets, along with a few rolls of oriental chords. Next, at a little faster speed (𝅘𝅥𝅮=104), the left hand takes the beat and the right hand plays with ‘son pincès.’ Then, in the Cadenza, we start with sixteenth notes, and then gradually accelerate into thirty-second notes, and into sixty-fourth notes as well. This is along with a ‘cres—cendo e accel—lerando molto’. Then there is a crashing loud glissando from the high treble clef to the low bass clef. After that, we play ‘son naturels’ and ‘xylo’ at 𝅘𝅥𝅮=88. Following that is a series of triplets, sixteenth notes, quintuplets, sextuplets, and chords. Lastly, we play the ‘son pincès’ section again, followed by the left hand beat with right hand chords and a double harmonic at the end.
The composer of Palace Lake is Grace Vamos Becker. Vamos grew up in Berkeley, California. She was a cellist. Vamos studied pedagogy at the Paris Conservatoire with, then received a Damrosch scholarship to live in France and study at the Fontainebleau School of Music. She returned to California and taught cello and composition at Mills College, where she studied composition. In 1937, Vamos traveled to Hungary to study composition as well. She left Hungary in 1939. Vamos returned to San Francisco where the Oakland Symphony performed her piano concerto in the premiere performance of a piano concerto by a female composer in the state of California. She formed the Trio Moderne with flautist Christine Howells Pfund and harpist Marie Hughes Marguarrie, which performed frequently, often playing arrangements by Vamos. Grace endowed several scholarships and awards.
Palace Lake has many areas where it uses techniques not usually used in music, such as the up and down glissando. Another example is the pedal change were you go from G♮, B♮, and D♮ to G♭, B♭, and D♭ all at once.

Étude de Concert, Op. 193 by Félix Godefroid is an expressive piece that features rapid arpeggios, flowing melodies, and dynamic contrasts. Godefroid, a Belgian harpist and composer, was known for his virtuosic and lyrical writing. This piece helps me refine my technique while bringing out its rich, expressive character.
11. Olivia Nam
Hello! I’m Olivia Nam, a 9th grader currently attending Mountain View High School. Mrs. Sonya Yu and Linda Rollo have been teaching me. I am a harpist for the CYS SO orchestra and also play in my school ensemble. Today, I am performing La Source (Am Springbrunnen) by Albert Zabel. Albert Zabel was a German composer and harpist born in 1834. He became a solo harpist for the Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg and gained recognition for his contributions to the harp repertoire. His influence on the development of harp music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries remains significant. La Source evokes a serene image of water cascading from a fountain, using arpeggios to create a sense of fluid movement.
12. Jiarui Wei
Jiarui Wei is a sophomore at Leland High School in San Jose and has played the harp for almost six years, studying under Sonya Yu. She is also currently part of the Silicon Valley Youth Harp Ensemble.
Etude de Concert, Op. 193 in E-flat minor was composed by Félix Godefroid (1818-1897), a Belgian harpist and composer who lived in Paris, France, for much of his life. Godefroid also composed for piano, though mostly for harp.
13. Liliana Abraham
Hi, my name is Liliana Abraham and I’ve been playing harp for around 5 years. My mom and grandma play the harp, so it kind of runs in the family. Since the age of 9, the instrument has been a subject of great interest for me and a focus.
I have attended the Young Artist’s Harp Seminar for the last 4 years and will be attending the seminar again this summer in Maryland. I currently have instruction in theory with Susan Bennet Brady, one of my instructors from the YAHS program.
Today, I’m going to be playing Sonatina by Sergei Natra. My teacher, Mrs. Linda Rollo has offered a unique, interpretive approach to this piece. She encouraged me to imagine the piece as a story to make it my own. As I play the piece, I imagine lucid, striking fjords cascading (present in the introduction), and the delicate tendrils of a passionflower (pictured in the glissando section).
Natra was a prolific artist who composed and consumed a wide range of music from Cantatas, Sonatinas, and Instrumental music to Dizzy Gillespie and works from the jazz genre.
The piece begins with a shocking, urgent introduction which spirals into 3 distinctive passages, whimsical and hypnotic, majestic yet intense, and culminates with a mystifying passage which is rendered nearly incomplete (in my opinion) by its last page, though intrinsic to the piece’s nearly meditative atmosphere.
14. Charlotte Trinh
Charlotte Trinh is an eighth-grader under the tutelage of Linda Wood Rollo, previously trained by Dominique Piana. She has won gold in the Yvonne LaMothe Schwager Competition from 2017 to 2023, gold in the CalASTA Competition in 2024, and was a finalist in the American Harp Society National Competition. Charlotte has performed the Dittersdorf Harp Concerto with the Sycamore Chamber Orchestra and was honored to perform in the Junior Bach Festival multiple times. In her free time, Charlotte enjoys doing crafts, ballet dancing, and drawing.
La Source or Am Springbrunnen, which imitates the movement of water, is one of the Romantic era composer Albert Zabel’s most famous works. Zabel (1834-1910) began studying harp under the harpist Louis Grimm, and began touring at the young age of eleven. At age fourteen, he became harpist to the Berlin opera and solo harpist with the Mariinsky Ballet in 1855. Zabel taught harp at the St Petersburg Conservatory, also earning the title honorary distinguished professor.

George Gershwin was an American composer and pianist who wrote popular, jazz, and classical music such as Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris. He began his career as a song plugger, later composing Broadway works with his brother and film scores in Hollywood. Eleanor Fell was a world renowned harpist, co-owner of Vanderbilt Music, and arranger of contemporary music on the harp, including some from Gershwin, Ellington, and the Beatles. She earned a Bachelor of Music in Harp from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, later performing throughout the U.S.
Rhapsody in Blue is a key composition that defined the Jazz Age. This work combines elements of both classical music and jazz influence. An American in Paris is a jazz-influenced tone poem inspired by the time Gershwin had spent in Paris during the Années folles, a period of social, artistic, and cultural collaborations in 1920s France.
