Welcome to Harley's K9s!
My name is Kathy O Kelly, a games based concept dog trainer and proud owner of Harley's K9s. I am an animal lover and crazy dog mom, obsessed with all things dog training and sports. Harley is my soul dog and has turned his paw to a variety of things, our newest obsession being Canicross!
Dog training is literally a dream job. After transforming Harley's behaviour, from absolute terror to dream dog, I want to help other struggling owners have the dog they always dreamed of.
This approach to training is all about having fun, building a strong relationship and empowering your dog by rewarding good choices. We move away from behaviours like sit, down and stay and instead, we work on developing concepts like Calmness, Confidence and Proximity so your dog has the skills required to succeed in any environment.
Whatever the struggle, we can choose the concepts your dog is lacking and work with them at home to prepare them for a variety of situations. The games are designed to allow your dog to make their own choices, set them up for success and reap the rewards. By allowing your dog agency, rather than giving commands, you develop their skills to make the right choices all by themselves.
This style of training, together with enrichment and management, will transform your dogs behaviour by ensuring their needs are met, preventing rehearsal of unwanted behaviour while preparing them for real life situations.
The best bit, games are adaptable for any breed, any age and any size! They are short, fun and easy to work into your busy schedule. Training should be a part of daily life not an hour you need to schedule.
I was inspired to become a trainer because of my own dog, Harley. He came into my life at 5 months old with a serious lack of training. He stole food, was destructive, couldn't be left alone, pulled on lead, reacted to other dogs, and the list goes on!
I had always wanted a dog of my own but Harley was far from my dream dog. I wanted to enjoy pub lunches, hikes and relaxing strolls. In reality, I was mortified to take my dog out in public and wouldn't dare let him off lead.
As a first time dog owner, I had little knowledge of Harley's needs or how to train effectively. I watched countless videos online and went to training classes which didn't make much difference. I even considered rehoming Harley, I was so fed up!
I stumbled across games based training and immediately got hooked. It was so much fun! My relationship with Harley blossomed and his behaviour improved day by day. Now, he is my best friend, the dog I always dreamed of. We enjoy walks, attend dog shows and lunch dates without any drama. And now, we compete in Canicross races!
This is why I became a dog trainer. This is why I started my own business. I am passionate about dog training and I love helping people. I aim to help new dog owners understand their dog's behaviour, meet their needs and train them to be the dog they always dreamed of.
