There is SB-100, SB-200, and the DELL versions of the SB card. and other models too.

So you need to see what model number your Sound blaster live card is and find the right driver.

And then there are the update fixes to add. a Real pain.

I uploaded the driver which worked (at least I think so) as an attachment, hopefully it works for you too.

The whole Creative driver situation is simply laughable, it's like they deliberately wanted to prevent you from reselling your sound card by providing seemingly hundreds of different CDs for different models instead of a unified driver.

What I was looking for is a 100% smooth install in 98SE with the CD only. No downloading additional drivers or even pointing the installation routine to the location of the proper file. And, of course, the Live! card had to work as it should. You know that there is not a match when, during the install process, an Add New Hardware window like the one below pops up.

I figured that among the dozen or so .ISO images on vogonsdrivers and archive.org, I could find a match for my other Live! models (CT4670, CT4780, CT4830, SB0220). The information on vogonsdrivers is not 100% reliable; the description might say that it works with CT4830, for instance, but it didn't with my card.

In the end, after trying about nine different CDs (with different dates for the folders), I could find a match for only one model: CT4670. The folder date for this one is 9/3/98, and I think it is on vogonsdrivers.

I have the full original SoundBlaster Live! purchased new in 1998 (I think the base card was the CT4620 plus the SPDIF digital output/MIDI breakout board). It's drivers were for Windows 9x/NT 4.0 only and that's likely what the 1998 dated CD is from. It also came with a terrible v1.0 DOS emulation driver that had zero FM synth emulation and a useless toolbar. The original bundle was 4 CDs worth of software and audio demos.

Also, one notorious CD image is missing. The Live!Ware 2000 release that came out with official Windows 2000 drivers around April 2000. Creative had one heck of a nerve charging their customers for these driver software packages.

I bought a Sound Blaster Live! 1024 Value back in mid-2000 (model number CT4830) and I still have that card's installation CD.

The disk contains the standard Creative software and drivers for Windows 95, 98, NT4 & 2000.

The files were created on the disc on 12 April 2000, but the Windows 95/98 & NT4 drivers dates back to October 1999.

I've uploaded it to my OneDrive account which can be copied to Vogonsdrivers (link below):

Come to think of it, I seem to recall the sound playback also being very quiet after the installation of the drivers from the CD -ROM.

There might be some "gain" controls under the Mixer settings. I cannot recall, as it has been almost 20 years since I've installed my card with a Windows 98SE setup.

I noticed that there is an "UPDDRV95.EXE" file in the \Win95drv folder. Perhaps run that and see if it makes a difference?

I'm pretty sure that a driver incompatibility is why the CT4830 did not work. You see, I started with the CT4830, got the 100% smooth install, but then no sound. But rather than reimage the HDD right away, I popped in the CT4780 (after trying another CT4830, as stated earlier), and it worked perfectly.

I'm thinking that the early model Live! cards pre-Windows XP and pre-WMA drivers would be excellent choices for EAX sound plus good SB16 compatibility with good wavetable. This is a dirt cheap solution for those wanting to get into retro gaming on PC.

I'm pretty sure it is installing the VXD drivers. The SB0100 CD install program gives you an option of selecting the VXD or WDM drivers during the install process but not your CT4830 CD install program.

I'm glad you posted this - I was researching which I should use with my CT4760 I just got, and was disappointed when I read this post that even with the official drivers they STILL get BSOD w/ VXD errors on this exact CT4760 Live card!

Do you have the CD you used successfully with your CT4760 linked someplace please? Otherwise I was going to use this on on Vogon's drivers. I have an ESS ES1869F ISA sound card installed as well if that matters.

DriverGuide maintains an extensive archive of Windows drivers available for free download. We employ a team from around the world which adds hundreds of new drivers to our site every day. How to Install Drivers Once you download your new driver, then you need to install it. To install a driver in Windows, you will need to use a built-in utility called Device Manager. It allows you to see all of the devices recognized by your system, and the drivers associated with them.

Many device drivers are not updated through the Microsoft Windows Update service. If you are having trouble finding the right driver, stop searching and fix driver problems faster with the Automatic Driver Update Utility. Automatic updates could save you hours of time.

The Driver Update Utility automatically finds, downloads and installs the right driver for your hardware and operating system. It will Update all of your drivers in just a few clicks, and even backup your drivers before making any changes.

Many computer problems are caused by missing or outdated device drivers, especially in Windows 11. If your desktop or laptop is running slow, or keeps crashing or hanging, there is a good chance that updating your drivers will fix the problem.

I just tried it no go the sound blaster still just uses mpu 401 emulation. But it did work on my ct4760 it did however introduce the hanging note bug when using the sound canvas in windows which was not there before.

Nice !This is an extremely intriguing thread, because I have SB0100 and I simply dont trust the Live! installation CD. I just use the necessary vxds to ensure that everything runs stable and theyre perfect if I just play Windows games, but it seems that I cant install the DOS drivers without installing Audio HQ before that. I did this once before and it forced wmds on my PC and fucked everything up. I had to do a clean install. Id love to try this method but is DirectX 9 necessary? Im asking this because I have a DX8 card (GF4 Ti4200) and Ive been told that it is recommended to stick with a DirectX thats period-correct with my GPU...

I'm using DirectX 9 mainly because that's what ships on the Audigy2 ZS driver installation CD. Not sure if the VxD drivers actually use DX9 functionality or not, but I would rather err on the side of caution.

That said, I also have a GeForce4 Ti4200 and haven't noticed any DX9 related issues with it. Depending on which driver version you use, DX9 might actually be the period correct choice. For example, Nvidia driver version 45.23 was released in July of 2003. By that time, DX9 was already out.

The only issue I have sometimes that after boot the VxD part (windows part) of the driver malfunctioning eg: any apps like basic windows sounds, winamp, diablo2, half life which would use the windows driver stucks in forever either don't open or hangs on 100% while the DOS games always work. be457b7860
