International Baccalaureate and Primary Years Programme Approach

Harkaway  Primary School is a candidate school* for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme and pursuing authorisation as an IB World School. IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision**

The Victorian Curriculum identifies the content to be taught to students and the International Baccalaureate gives the school a framework, context and approach from which we learn and teach.

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organisation works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The PYP is founded on a philosophy that recognizes a child’s natural curiosity, creativity and ability to reflect, the PYP generates a stimulating, challenging learning environment to nurture those assets and foster a lifelong love of learning in every child. The PYP, like all IB programmes, is transdisciplinary, meaning students learn across subject areas while investigating big ideas.

The IB learner profile is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century.

As IB learners we strive to be:
