In May of 2023, Charles de Bourbon, the SCA Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Officer, made a challenge group for Pride-Themed garb which he outlines below:
The FAFO Garb challenge:
Make a period(ish) outfit inspired by a pride flag (or multiple) or a cultural reference that means something to you.
Wear it to your group’s Yule/12th night celebrations and post pictures - that gives us 6-7 months to do this!

Let’s take up space. Let’s be visible. We are here, and our SCA is Inclusive, and there is no place for hate in the SCA.
If you're interested, the link to join the group is here.
When the challenge was initially announced, I decided that I was going to try and make a transgender pride flag inspired outfit in the style of Anglo-Saxon, which is my main period. However, when the theme of our Midwinter event, the Silk Road, was announced, I decided to switch gears and do something Middle-Eastern inspired.
My original concept and design.
The coat with the completed buttons and buttonholes.
A closer look of the buttons (and my being so done with making them lol).
My first fitting of the rainbow tunic. The fabric came from a thrift store.
Trying on the tunic with the belt.
Showing off the sleeve with the rainbow fabric I used as a trim.
While I had plans for a rainbow scarf for the head piece, I went ahead and made a pillbox cap with pink and blue wool, using white fleece for the headband.
Here is the full outfit, with the scarf included. The trans pride belt was made by a friend, and the shoes were also a gift.
Final Thoughts
I learned a lot with this process. I learned how to make thread wrapped buttons finally, and I used techniques I've learned over the last few years. I worked with gores and gussets, which took some finagling. All in all, I am very proud of the outfit, and I am already planning next year's project.
