Leiden, English Leyden (municipality) Leiden, English Leyden (municipality), western Netherlands. It is situated near the confluence of the Oude Rijn, Nieuwe Rijn (Old Rhine ) and New Rhine) rivers. It lies 10 miles (16km) northeast of The Hague. It is 5 miles (8km) away from the North Sea.
William I (the Silent) the Prince of Orange established the University of Leiden in 1575 to reward citizens who fought bravely during the battle. The 17th and 18th centuries the university was an important center for Dutch Reformed science and medicine. It was home to such famous scholars as Hugo Grotius Scaliger and Jacobus Arminius, Daniel Heinsius and Franciscus (Frans), Hemsterhuis, Hermann Boerhaave. The university also plays host to the Royal Institute of Linguistics and Anthropology as well as the National Museum of Antiquities and the National Museum of Ethnology of Asia. It is also home to the Museum of the History of Science and the botanical gardens (1587) and the observatory. Numerous famous artists were born in Leiden and include Jan van Goyen and Jan Steen, Gabriel Metsu and Gerard Dou. These artists made Leiden the epicenter of the Dutch artistic Renaissance during the 17th century.
Leiden was a city that suffered from economic stagnation following the demise of the textile industry in the 18th century. Then came industrialization during the latter half of the 19th century. The city's primary business activities are food processing, graphic arts as well as the production of construction materials. Leiden is home to one of the largest national cattle and cheese markets. Also, there are bulb-growing farms located in west. The beaches of Noordwijk, Katwijk and Katwijk are within reach. The surrounding residential areas have seen lots of growth in the years since World War II but the core of the city's activity remains the town's old part.
Boerhaave Museum
Boerhaave Museum is also known as the Royal Museum Of The History Of Natural And Exact Sciences. It is situated in Leiden (Neth.) and is a museum dedicated to the natural sciences and history. It is home to a fascinating collection of instruments used in science that date back to the past. It includes a collection that was owned by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) as well as thermometers belonging to D.G. Fahrenheit (1686-1736).
