Diagnosis Decoder ~

a (w)holistic, whole-body and whole-systems, approach to decoding diagnoses

Medical Naming Conventions that you should know, so that you know "what's really wrong" and that a "diagnosis" is only a description of your current condition. It does not speak to a cause. Nor does it speak to a cure. (note: "cure" used to mean "preserve", as in ham.)

Definition of the word diagnosis: "the recognition of a disease from its symptoms."

The word disease is "dis - ease" or "ill-at-ease" or "ill". If you have a dis-ease, you do not feel well.

Got a diagnosis? want to know what it means? Following is a list of the main words used in a diagnosis.

Chronic - developing over years
Acute - sudden onset
Pathology - the study of disease
Syndrome - a group of symptoms that has no known cause
Treatment - Care. A "treat" (treatment should not be worse than the disease)

Word Endings (suffixes)

diagnoses are made up words consisting most commonly of:

the name of a system or body part (often in another language) and
a word ending.
sometimes the dis-ease is named after the most famous sufferer.

-itis: inflamation (it's red, inflammed, and it hurts)

- tonsil - itis
- appendix - itis
- sinus - itis
- tendon - itis

-osis: an abnormality

- Amyotrophic Lateral Scler-osis (ALS) ~
  - Amyotrophic - (Greek)
    - A - no
    - myo - muscle
    - trophic - nourishment
  - Lateral - "side" (inside vs outside)
  - Sclera - connective tissue
- Cirrh-osis ~ kirrhos, yellow.
- Cystic Fibr-osis ~ tiny fluid sacs (cysts) and hardened tissue (fibrosis) scar tissue
- Endometri-osis ~ "the inner lining of the uterus" - osis;
- halit-osis ~ halitus (breath or exhalation) - bad breath
- Multiple scler-osis (MS) ~ "sclera" ~ actually the tough, fibrous connective tissue of the eye ~ I don't see how the word "sclera" equates to the "myelin sheath of a nerve" except that people with MS may actually have connective tissue (fascia) that has become "tough and fibrous".
- -osis generally indicates
  - an abnormal condition (see "-ia"),
  - disease state (see "dis-ease"),
  - pathological (see "pathology") process, or
  - an increase in a physical element (such as a cell count) ("too-much")

-emia: means a blood condition or the presence of a substance in the blood
- Anemia: A condition characterized by a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin, leading to reduced oxygen transport and fatigue.
- Bacteremia: The presence of bacteria in the bloodstream.
- Hypoglycemia: An abnormally low level of glucose (sugar) in the blood.
- Leukemia: A type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow, marked by an abnormal increase in white blood cells.

Derived from the Greek word haima (meaning "blood"), it is used to describe various systemic disorders, infections, or chemical imbalances related to the circulatory system.

-ia: Words ending in -ia typically denote conditions

- Poikilo-therm-ia ~ (greek) various - temperature - condition
- Fibro-my-algia ~ (greek) fiberous connective tissue - muscle - pain

-asia (along with related forms like -asis and -osis): a condition, state, or process.

It usually denotes an abnormal, unhealthy, or diseased state of a specific body part or system. Common examples include:

Ectasia: The dilation, stretching, or expansion of a hollow organ or vessel (e.g., bronchiectasis, the abnormal widening of the airways).
Phasia: A root/suffix combination relating to speaking or speech conditions (e.g., aphasia, the loss of ability to understand or express speech)

Systems - a system describes all the parts of the body that perform a function (many parts do more than one job). (drop down for a list)

- Autoimmune (automatic defense)

- Connective Tissue or Fascial (connects everything)
- Digestive (nutrition)

Immune System - Key Components:

- White Blood Cells (Leukocytes): The "soldiers" of the immune system that circulate through the blood and lymph.
- Lymphatic System: A network of vessels, lymph nodes, the spleen, and the thymus that filters bodily fluid, stores immune cells, and mounts responses to infections.
- Bone Marrow: The spongy tissue inside your bones where all blood cells originate
