May 15th is the day when we celebrate teachers, educators and professors in Mexico (Dia del Maestro, in Spanish). I love teaching. Actually, I feel that I was born to teach. In fact, I was born to two educators (my Mom is a professor of government and political science at the Universidad de Guanajuato, and my Dad is a lawyer who taught law for decades). My brothers (all of the four of them) have all taught high school or post-secondary in one way or another. One of them, my oldest brother (Arturo) did his PhD at the University of Notre Dame, and is now a tenured Associate Professor at California State University Los Angeles. Rafael got his PhD from, and then taught at Arizona State University. We all did our graduate degrees abroad, and even though only my Mom, Arturo and I officially remain in the higher education field, we all have taught at some point in our lives.

World Teachers' Day falls annually on October 5. The day honours the role teachers play in shaping and transforming our lives. After our parents, our teachers are often the first point of contact in our journey to becoming adults who contribute positively to society and in shaping our future. This day aims to commemorate the anniversary of the 1966 ILO and UNESCO Recommendation adoption concerning the Status of Teachers, setting benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions. While India celebrates Teachers' Day on September 5 to mark Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's birth anniversary, the world marks Teachers' Day a month later.

- "There are two kinds of teachers: the kind that fill you with so much quail shot that you can't move, and the kind that just gives you a little prod behind and you jump to the skies." - Robert Frost

One way of respecting teachers is by simply thanking them for what they do, especially since teachers may feel underappreciated at times. But, although students may not always show it, the gratitude in their hearts for their teachers runs deep. Thus, offer these bible verses for teachers appreciation to show gratitude towards your mentors and educators. Most certainly, a simple show of appreciation can go a long way. Above all, may these be good bible verses for teachers help them to find the affirmation that they need.

Here are the happy teachers who attended a workshop at the new technology innovation center in the Old Odonasi Village in Ghana for several primary schools serving 440 students and 30 teachers. The center was built by Empathy FX International and has 80 computers that were sent from WCE. They are naming one of their computer lab spaces after WCE Founder Timothy Anderson.

I really appreciate teachers who are truly passionate about teaching. The teacher who wants to be an inspiration to others. The teacher who is happy with his/her job at all times. The teacher who every child in the school would love to have. The teacher kids remember for the rest of their lives. Are you that teacher? Read on and learn 11 effective habits of an effective teacher.

Bring positive energy into the classroom every single day. You have a beautiful smile so don't forget to flash it as much as possible throughout the day. I know that you face battles of your own in your personal life but once you enter that classroom, you should leave all of it behind before you step foot in the door. Your students deserve more than for you to take your frustration out on them. No matter how you are feeling, how much sleep you've gotten or how frustrated you are, never let that show. Even if you are having a bad day, learn to put on a mask in front of the students and let them think of you as a superhero (it will make your day too)! Be someone who is always positive, happy and smiling. Always remember that positive energy is contagious and it is up to you to spread it. Don't let other people's negativity bring you down with them.

As a teacher, there are going to be times where you will be observed formally or informally (that's also why you should give 100% at all times). You are constantly being evaluated and criticized by your boss, teachers, parents and even children. Instead of feeling bitter when somebody has something to say about your teaching, be open-minded when receiving constructive criticism and form a plan of action. Prove that you are the effective teacher that you want to be. Nobody is perfect and there is always room for improvement. Sometimes, others see what you fail to see.

An effective teacher reflects on their teaching to evolve as a teacher. Think about what went well and what you would do differently next time. You need to remember that we all have "failed" lessons from time to time. Instead of looking at it as a failure, think about it as a lesson and learn from it. As teachers, your education and learning is ongoing. There is always more to learn and know about in order to strengthen your teaching skills. Keep reflecting on your work and educating yourself on what you find are your "weaknesses" as we all have them! The most important part is recognizing them and being able to work on them to improve your teaching skills.

But what about the teachers? How are we ever going to give students what they need if our own basic needs go unmet? We know that students need to learn through high-quality, hands-on lessons for multiple hours each day. Which then means that teachers need enough time to plan for those lessons.

The amount of time it takes to teach and then actually run a classroom extends far beyond a daily 40-minute planning period. Quite frankly, teachers are tired of unpaid labor. But where do we find more plan time during contract hours with students always present? That is a question my own school district addressed this past year with a welcome schedule change.

At first, I was cautious. I tried not to save any work for Friday afternoons, thinking there would inevitably be something extra that filled that time. (We veteran teachers get pretty used to being promised things will get easier and then somehow they get harder and/or busier.)

The communication from my principal regarding Fridays was excellent. She made it clear that we would still have meetings occasionally, but she would prioritize work time for teachers. Any meetings that did take place did not take up our entire time. Finally someone was meeting our basic needs by providing paid time to prepare to teach.

With the early dismissal schedule in full swing, what happened during my actual 40-minute prep time each day? I filled that time with meaningful work too. I collaborated with other teachers on my team, which always benefits both teachers and students. Of course, I filled some daily prep time with the usual rush of making copies, filling backpacks, messaging parents, running to the restroom, and filling up my water bottle. I appreciated the extra work time all year long, but it proved crucial at the end of the school year. Family engagement activities, end-of-year assessments, student portfolios, and packing up my classroom all required extra time.

Teachers' Day is one of the best occasions as it highlights the hard work and passion of teachers in shaping the future of any nation. Teachers should be loved and respected everywhere for their irreplaceable roles.

Throughout history, teachers have raised scholars, philosophers, doctors, engineers, and people from all the professions. Hats off to all the wonderful educators and teachers. Happy Teachers' Day 2023.
