I remember one time in particular their cousin was having a birthday coming up so the (I assume it was primary) class sang a Happy Birthday song... except it wasn't the usual "happy birthday" song but something else that they weren't familiar with. My SIL who was in charge of the class laughed about how they didn't know the song but I could tell my kids were embarrassed. They already felt like strangers and then to be given the opportunity to participate in something only to realize that they were still "outsiders" in church. My heart still hurts for them and since then we've stopped allowing them to attend with in-law family for regular services.

To arrive at his decision, the judge considered a 1922 songbook that features a version of the birthday song called "Good Morning and Birthday Song," written by sisters Mildred and Patty Hill. That iteration of the tune includes the familiar "happy birthday to you" lyrics and is listed as appearing through "special permission" of the Summy Co. with no mention of a copyright.

I've heard it on at least two TV shows (Gilmore Girls in the episode in season 1 where it's Rory's birthday, and The Cut I think), and it's a relatively high pitched female voice. The "happy birthday"s are in sort of quick succession, and the "hap" is a lower note, with the "py" emphasized and higher, and the "birthday" all one note and consistent emphasis.

"Everyone who has a birthday can celebrate," he continued. "Strong copyright protection is important for artists and content creators, but it must have limits. This landmark ruling recognizes the value of the public domain."

Rupa Marya, leader of the band Rupa & the April Fishes, who recorded the tune three years ago at a San Francisco nightclub on the eve of her birthday, was among the plaintiffs. She said she was shocked when her attorney broke the news that she would have to shell out $455 to include it on her live album, CBS Los Angeles reported.

For many children, birthdays matter. I needed to honor these days in ways that were meaningful and relevant for each of my students. So a few days after that moment at breakfast with William, I launched a birthday songs curriculum, inviting families to send in lyrics for birthday songs they knew so we could learn about them. I hoped this project would help children feel excited about celebrating birthdays in school. I also hoped it would be one of many ways to break Eurocentric norms in my classroom and help my students feel welcome and empowered.

Many children wanted to ask their parents about other birthday songs they knew, so I suggested that we request this information by writing one big letter to their families. Students suggested words for this note and helped write some words; I wrote the rest.

While the class was at recess, I took a photo of the letter and put copies of the photo in folders that children take between home and school each day. In addition, I gave each family two pieces of paper on which a family member could write lyrics for a birthday song (or songs) they knew; their child could illustrate. I also sent an email to families clarifying the goals of the study.

In late May, we made our class birthday song into a songbook. I put each phrase of the song on paper and each child illustrated a page during writing time. I put this book on our bookshelf and each child took a copy home.

The whole point of studying birthday songs was to help children feel welcome to use home languages at school and learn about languages that classmates speak. A few weeks after we made the songbook, the curriculum appeared to be working.

Plus, if you know anything about Latin American cultures, you know we know how to throw a party! From cumbia to bachata to mariachi and beyond, there are countless unique kinds of music that make Latin American birthday parties unmissable.

The most common one is almost a word-for-word translation of the English happy birthday song. This is the most popular birthday song in Spain and most of South America. The lyrics are very similar to the English version, although there are two main variations!

Many people enjoy birthday cards on their birthdays as they can keep them as fun keepsakes of their loved ones. If you know anyone like this, you might be looking to learn how to write a happy birthday card in Spanish.

Likewise, there are a few different ways to close out your birthday message depending on the context. Here are a few popular phrases for ending your birthday card like a pro, along with the corresponding context.

Beyond ways to just send a happy birthday message in Spanish, there are plenty of auxiliary words that will help you deal with birthdays in Spanish-speaking countries. Here is some birthday vocabulary in Spanish to help you round out your knowledge.

The birthday person (and oftentimes party guests as well) must hit and break the piata so that all the candy falls on the ground. Once the piata is broken, all guests are welcome to charge for the candy on the ground!

La mordida is one of the more bizarre birthday traditions in Latin America. Of course, all birthday parties must include a birthday cake, but they tend to serve a very different purpose across Latin America.

One of the most famous Latin American birthday traditions is the quinceaera. This is an extra-special, once-in-a-lifetime celebration that happens only when a girl turns 15. This is a major milestone as it marks the beginning of the transition from childhood to womanhood.

Stevie recorded this jubilant ditty in 1981 to promote the push for a national day honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. And it worked! Two years later, President Reagan signed the holiday into law. Play this one for the freedom fighter in your life on his or her birthday.

In 1984, the song's lyrics were altered for a music video to celebrate Donald Duck's 50th birthday, using the original backing track and clips of classic Donald cartoons and 2nd ID of Donald Duck opening his presents bumpers form Disney Channel. The song was also featured in a live parade at Disneyland and Walt Disney World in Donald's honor. It was also featured prominently in a TV special to mark the occasion.

In 1988 the song was featured yet again, this time with altered lyrics to celebrate Mickey Mouse's 60th birthday in the stage show Mickey's 60th Birthday Surprise, performed at both Disneyland andWalt Disney World until 1990.

Thank you for posting this! I was telling my husband about this hilariously depressing birthday song we did in high school choir (90's), and couldn't find anything else like it online... Thought I was going crazy. Great job!

The Happy Birthday song (also known as Happy Birthday, Swiper) is what Dora, Boots, Benny, Isa, Tico, and Big Red Chicken sing to Swiper after figuring out whose birthday it is, and it was his (in the personalized version, they sang it to the kid featured in the video instead and it was his/her birthday). It was only (and exclusively) heard on Whose Birthday is It?.

AdvertisingĀ  The current Chuck E. Cheese advertising campaign uses "Happy Birthday To You" in it. A lot. The song is also used within the live birthday shows, even before 2015. It is believed they paid to use the song. The Partnership for a Drug Free America PSA "Faces" from the 1980s used a creepy version of the tune but different lyrics over close up footage of a girl slowly deteriorating and finally dying from the effects of drug abuse. ("How old are you now? La da dee da da dee...") A Dairy Queen commercial had an interesting variation: the first line of the song is the same but the other lines talk about other occasions one could celebrate while showing the different ice cream cakes one could have made by the company for said occasions.

Comic BooksĀ  This is sung on the birthday of Carmine Falcone in The Long Halloween, which so happens to be the same day Harvey Dent is going to make a landmark case against him. The comic intercuts with the song being sung to Falcone and a paid hitman attacking Dent, ending with acid being thrown into his face."Make a wish, Papa!" In The Simpsons comic "Hotfoot in the Park" (issue 93), Homer and his pals became volunteer firefighters. When they realized they couldn't do anything when a fair caught on fire, Ralph comes up with an idea to put out the fire, by singing the birthday song and blowing it out like birthday candles. The whole cast begins to sing the song, but then the Blue-Haired Lawyer comes in warning them about the royalties of the song they'd need to pay to sing it before he passes out from the smoke. So Lisa writes up a new unique birthday song ("...pleasant birthday to that person, we're glad you're not dead!") and then they all blow on the fire, which actually extinguishes the blaze! 2351a5e196
