As an architectural and interior designer, I have visited many cities, not only as a traveler, but also as a flâneur. This collection began as 12 Cities during the pandemic, when everyone was confined to their homes. During that time, I revisited photographs I had taken and sketches I had drawn in my notebooks while traveling, searching for the sense of movement I felt when walking through each city.
Rome emerged first, followed by others, such as New York, Beijing, Kyoto, and more. These drawings are not simple reproductions of buildings. Rather than copying and pasting architecture into an image, I combine structures with the emotions, memories, and stories that unfolded during each visit.
Although I use digital media, these works are not computer-generated. I draw using the most traditional method: by hand. To keep the process honest and direct, I use ink, much like my usual practice on paper.
The collection later expanded when I was asked to draw cities that were not my own—such as Rio de Janeiro and Chongqing. As the number of works exceeded twelve, the project evolved and was renamed The Cities.
All works are created on an A3 canvas (297 × 420 mm).
