We welcome all residents who want to preserve and enhance what is best about Hanwell Village Green, London Borough of Ealing
The waters of the River Brent and the natural springs, which gave Hanwell its name, attracted inhabitants as far back as the Domesday Book in 1086. Today, Brent Lodge Park is part of the Brent River Park, which comprises of open space along 7km of the Brent Valley and the Grand Union Canal. It makes Hanwell the greenest part of Ealing. In March 2026, the proposed West London Regional Park was launched and will create and protect a connected green landscape including 13 km of walking and cycling as well as improved access to nature.
Hanwell boasts the Wharnciffe Viaduct built in 1835-37, by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the outstanding nineteenth-century engineer. We are still very well connected as Hanwell is a station on the new Elizabeth Line, which is also a Grade 2 listed building. St Mary's Church designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott (architect of St. Pancras), and the daughters of painter Thomas Gainsborough are buried in its grounds.
For a short time Hanwell was home to Charlie Chaplin at the Cuckoo School for the Poor. It was also home to Dr John Connolly who, as superintendent of St. Bernard's Hospital, pioneered human treatment for the mentally ill; Connolly Dell was once part of the grounds of his house.
Hanwell’s history is reflected in the many designated Conservation Areas, including Hanwell Village Green Conservation area, which borders onto Churchfields and Brent Lodge Park. This means we have some protections and have benefited from the excellent work of many organisations and individuals to preserve what is best about Hanwell; its green and wild places, its buildings and its close community - it is this that our Residents' Association wants to continue.

Keeping Preserving our architectural past - we work with other residents’ associations and campaign groups to ensure that new or changing developments are designed in a way that preserves or enhances our architectural heritage. There was a Conservation Review by Ealing Council in 2025 and the Hanwell Village Green boundaries remained much the same. Further information can be found here. https://ealing.moderngov.co.uk/documents/s22100/20251119_ConservationAreaReview.pdf
We liaise with the Principle Heritage Officer at LB of Ealing over planning and environmental issues. We are pursuing a range of projects to enhance the safety of the area particularly around the village green.
Hanwell Safe - We have a close association with the police through the North Hanwell Neighbourhood Team, including 2 members on the Forum. There is new platform called Met Engage through which you can get to know your local officers, help shape how we police your local area and have direct access to key information and advice. https://www.metengage.co.uk/Content/LocalArea/79952/North%20Hanwell
Officers regularly attend our meetings and there is a weekly round-up of any incidents via email- NorthHanwell@contact.metengage.co.uk
3) Improving our public transportation links - alongside the Hanwell Station Users Group we campaign to improve services at Hanwell Station. We are fortunate to be on the Elizabeth Line and we now have 4 trains per hour and a Sunday service. We want to lobby for more trains in rush hours and to reduce the gap between the platform and the trains.
4) Improving the environmental quality of our area - whether it be through the LAGERCAN (Litter Action Group Ealing Residents), HACAN (a voice for those affected by aircraft noise from Heathrow) or through our links with Brent River Park Trust ,we use our collective voice to make Hanwell a great environment to live in. www.brentriverpark.org
5) Protecting the wildlife in our area - we are fortunate to live next door to a large area of wild and managed parkland. Brent River Park’s Charity Campaign brought together 26,000 signatories and a wide range of conservation organisations and community groups to ensure Warren Farm is now a designated Nature Reserve comprising 24 hectares of rewilded land. There is also commitment to develop the West London Regional Park. We need to be involved in having a say in how these great projects develop to ensure they are what residents want. Also on our own doorstep, we have the Rose Garden project which is aiming to improve the garden design while increasing pride in our parks and building community spirit.
