Character Design: Fairy Fight Club

Fairy Fight Club

Fairy Fight Club was the unofficial name for the unofficial comic that me and another artist collaborated on. The story was about a young fairy who, against his mother's wishes, was determined to excel in the infamous, underground fairy fight club.

Kai

When collaborating on creating a character, I find it easier to create something of a mood board so that both parties are on the same page

The main character, Kai (short for "Cairo" meaning, "Victorious") was inspired by several protagonists, including Henry from "Mom, I'm Sorry", Ujun/Hyeonsu from "My Universe", Jock from "Boyfriends.", Yechan from "Love Tractor", and Zagreus from the videogame "Hades"

For the fairy society, we decided they would be based more on moths than butterflies, so Kai's design was based on an African Peach Moth. Because he's a fighter, I wanted his outfit to be more athletic while still being whimsical

Even though his design and color palette was pretty much established, I still played around with different options to solidify that decision

Lock

This was the mood board I created for Kai's right hand man, Lock (short for "Hemlock"). He has a "go with the flow" attitude and is Kai's biggest supporter.

Lock was inspired by several characters, including Wyn from "Nice to Meet You", Wallace from "Scott Pilgrim", Spud from "American Dragon: Jake Long", Toby from "Hazy London", and Yamato from "Say I Love You"

Lock's design was based on the Luna Moth. A lot of fairy fashion was inspired by rave outfits, which adds to the whimsy and colorful nature

I knew I wanted Lock's hair to be wild and carefree, like himself, but how wild to go? I played around with a few options

Lock has extra long ears that curve on the tip to mimic the wings of the Luna Moth

Fight Club Announcer

This fairy hides her identity as she is the announcer at the dodgy underground fight club.
Her design is based on a Rosy Maple Moth

We hadn't given her a name since it didn't come up in the short story we were telling, but we had planned on her being a much bigger character, and potentially Kai's love interest

Her outfit was the most difficult to pin down, we needed a great MC outfit, almost like a Ring Leader, and there were so many different avenues we could go

I ultimately went with option 2 here because honestly I was OBSESSED with this look. Of course, if this became a long form comic, we would have seen this character don many outfits and hairstyles

She was also going to be someone that knew Kai in his regular life, and thus knew he was secretly fighting in the club. Keeping this secret between them is what starts their friendship.

Bramble

Bramble was Kai's fighting opponent. Rather than being based off a moth, this fairy was based on the idea of a thorn bush, implying they're from out of town. I chose designs that were sharp and thorny to fit that description.

Unfortunately, there's no plans to return to this project, but I'm very proud of the work I was able to accomplish and all the things I learned throughout this process
