Prof. Hanna Herzog was born in Tel Aviv in 1946 and was raised in Kiryat Bialik. She matriculated at the Hebrew Reali School in Haifa, completed her B.A. in Sociology and Bible at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and was awarded her Ph.D. in Sociology from Tel Aviv University in 1981.

Her research offers an innovative approach to society, based on the premise that defines it as an ongoing process of struggle over social boundaries, identities and qualities. Her work analyzes the relationships between the excluded and those who exclude, focusing both theoretically and empirically on the human experience on the fringes of society, and using the knowledge derived from these experiences to develop a new view of social arrangements. She pioneered a critical approach to ethnicity and politics as well as to gender studies.

She is a senior research fellow and served as academic director of the Civil Society forums at the Van Leer Institute in Jerusalem. In 2009, she co-founded with Prof. Naomi Chazan the Center for Women in the Public Sphere (WIPS) at Van Leer. She served as thesis adviser to numerous M.A. and Ph.D. students, and has published many books and articles, in both the theoretical and empirical spheres, on political-historical sociology, focusing on ethnic, national and gender inequality.

Over the years she has fulfilled a variety of functions, including President of the (International) Association for Israel Studies and head of the Sociology Department of Tel Aviv University. She is also among the founders of Woman and Gender Studies in Israel, of the Society and Politics Section at the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Academic College, and of Israeli Sociology – A Journal for the Study of Israeli Society. Her work has earned her awards and citations, including as Colorado Scholar and Research Associate at the Women’s Studies in Religion Program at Harvard University.
