Through these various writing assignments I developed stronger revision habits as well as learned to strategically use different source types, and practice writing in multiple different genres. I now approach writing as a reflective process and feel more confident in making rhetorical decisions based on my audience purpose, and overall genre.
Outcome 1: Demonstrate awareness of how disciplinary values influence how a writer approaches a topic, identifies audiences, develops a persona, and articulates a purpose for writing.
“The Importance of Revising Your Manuscripts” reflection on Donald Murray’s advice about revision is connected into various different academic writing practices throughout the semester. This assignment helped me to further understand the value of her vision in academic writing, and consider how a writer can adopt a persona and purpose when addressing a specific audience.
Outcome 2: Develop an understanding of how texts are written, researched, organized, and disseminated in multiple disciplines.
“Kinds of Summary” summary and takeaway allowed me to learn the differences between summarizing paraphrasing, patchwriting, and quoting. I was able to learn and understand how these sources appear differently in academic disciplines. This assignment helped me to recognize further conventions for using and citing sources in formal academic writing.
Outcome 3: Synthesize and analyze credible and relevant evidence and/or sources to support ideas for specific rhetorical purposes appropriate to various disciplines.
My Spaces for Writing & Strategic Reading Reflection notes involved analyzing multiple different sources for implicit messages and then further synthesizing multiple different pieces of information. Through visualizing texts, rhetorical appeals, implicit/explicit meanings, I was able to further develop a clear and critical interpretation.
Outcome 4: Demonstrate the use of conventions relative to various disciplines to develop organization, content, presentation, and style.
“The Importance of Revising Your Manuscripts” reflective essay demonstrated my ability to follow academic essay structures. As well as presented a focused reflection with clear organization and maintain a consistent formal style appropriate for college level English courses.
Outcome 5: Construct texts in various discipline-specific genres and media that communicate a controlling idea with clarity and fluency.
My Spaces for Writing & Strategic Reading Reflection allowed me to organize academic notes and reflect on tailored academic inquiries. This all further demonstrated my ability to switch between informal reflections and structured academic notes.
Outcome 6: Demonstrate consistent control of written language in response to disciplinary conventions.
All of my written assignments maintained academic tone, proper grammar, sentence fluency, and appropriate citation conventions. I was able to show awareness of when to shift tones and styles between formal and informal writing based on a specific rhetorical situation and overall disciplinary expectations.
