When I reflect on the characteristics that define great teachers, I think of “curiosity” as an umbrella under which other positive qualities fall. In order to create a positive impact within one’s community, an educator must first seek to understand her community, her content area, and herself. This is not a learning experience that has a finish line, for teaching is about modeling an attitude of being a lifelong learner while understanding the needs of the students and loving them for who they are.

To understand the community as a teacher, one must be curious to learn from the students and come to the classroom without prejudice or judgment. Every individual is different, with her own experiences, ideas, strengths, and weaknesses. Students also hold different passions and interests; learning these as a teacher helps to find ways to connect and make the content relevant to each student. Remembering the teachers I admire the most, I think of how they affirmed my positive characteristics while pushing me to do better in areas where I struggled. It is important to know the level of understanding and capabilities of the students, but I believe it is just as important to have high expectations for them so that they develop their own dreams, goals, and confidence in themselves.

I believe that in order to be an outstanding educator today, one must also understand the needs of the students in today’s mental health crisis. Anxiety is at a level higher than we have seen before, and educators must be compassionate to this, while still expecting students to give their best. It is understood that students must have their basic needs met before they can learn and thrive. When a teacher creates a classroom environment where students feel safe and comfortable, they are more likely to advocate for themselves, which in turn helps them become more successful. An effective teacher must also exhibit fair and consistent classroom management, which ties into creating a safe space that fosters learning and creativity. 

Additionally, curious teachers demonstrate an interest in their content area. If a teacher does not show excitement for her subject, how can she expect students to invest themselves in her assignments? This is also important for maintaining relevance when teaching contemporary subject matter.

Maintaining an outlook of curiosity is a defining quality of an outstanding educator because this mindset allows room for the ability to self-reflect, ask questions, and communicate effectively. This growth mindset improves teaching skills, communication with leadership, and allows the teacher to act as a good role model for her pupils. Teachers are lifelong learners who cultivate creativity and curiosity within their students that will carry them beyond the classroom.
