In Messiah there seems to be three different themes that are present in each part of this oratorio.
On this page, we are going to look into the major theme present in each part of Messiah.
Hope is a present theme throughout Part I in Messiah. In the first scene of Messiah, it starts out with the message of Hope coming to the people of Israel. God promises the people that His glory will be revealed and that someone will come who will eventually save them from their suffering. This causes the hope of the coming Messiah making it a big theme throughout this section. This leads into the prophesies from Isaiah and other Old Testament books coming true through the birth of Christ. This section then ends with songs from scripture of the prophesies which tell about Christ and His ministry.
Salvation is a present theme throughout Part II in Messiah. This section goes through how Christ is the Lamb of God and He is sent to take away the sins of the world. It goes through all of the suffering that Christ went through in order to bring salvation to the world. One of the songs in this section that really shows this theme is "And with His Stripes we are Healed," as it shows how Christ went through all this suffering so that we could be healed from our sins. The rest of this section goes through how Christ defeats death and ascends up into heaven. It ends with the glory of God being present and how He reigns forever and ever. I feel that salvation is a really good theme for this section, because it shows why Christ had to suffer in order for us to have salvation.
Restoration is a present theme throughout Part III of Messiah. This section focuses a lot on Christ's resurrection and how death was conquered throughout this whole process. When death was overcome, our relationship with God gives us, as humans, the opportunity to now restore our relationship with Him. Because of this, we can worship and praise God the rest of our lives for everything He has done for us. Overall, we can always have that opportunity to have restoration in our relationship with God and this section shows that throughout the songs.
