This project explores the impact of social media on both individuals and society. By analyzing statistics, taking a quiz, and reflecting on my own habits, I gained insight into how social media shapes daily life.
After taking the “Am I Addicted to Social Media?” quiz, I realized that I spend more time online than I thought. My results suggested that while I’m not fully addicted, I do rely on social media quite a bit. On average, I spend four hours a day scrolling through different platforms. This made me think about whether I need to cut back and be more mindful of my usage.
One statistic that stood out to me is that 64% of Americans believe social media has a mostly negative effect on the way things are going in the U.S. today (Auxier, 2020). This caught my attention because I often see negativity and misinformation spreading online. Social media can be a great tool for communication, but it also contributes to division, arguments, and false information. This makes me more aware of the content I consume and share.
Social media has changed how people communicate and access information. It has positive effects, like keeping people connected and spreading awareness about important issues. However, it also has downsides, such as misinformation, cyberbullying, and unrealistic expectations. Many people compare their lives to what they see online, which can impact mental health. While social media is useful, I think people should be careful about how much they rely on it and make sure it’s not affecting them negatively.
This project helped me realize how much time I actually spend on social media. It also made me think about how platforms shape people’s opinions and emotions. Moving forward, I want to be more mindful of my usage and focus on using social media in a healthier way.
