Macroinvertebrates Day!
On my walk over to the stream this morning, I noticed this very bright purple flower, and perhaps a bee as well (pictured in smaller image).
This is the same flower plant pictured above, only I took this picture on my way home a few hours later. I wonder why its petals have closed up.
After doing some research, I learned that it's natural for chicory flowers to close and lose their bright color as midday approaches.
Today I walked to my location starting upstream and walking downstream. I noticed this particularly large stick pileup, and when I looked closer I saw a plastic bottle hiding in there. These are most likely a leftover result of the recent flooding.
This is the underside of an evergreen wood fern that I found right by my sitting spot. Most of the right bank of the stream is populated by this fern.
The spots on the underside are called sorus (or multiple sori) and they contain the fern's spores.

Macroinvertebrate Tally and Count
I experimented with the new techniques Marika taught us yesterday, like making a vanishing point and doing the blind contour (image on the right). This was a different sketching experience than I'm used to, because I typically spend lots of time on the details.
