The Hamungaya Farms Story: A Legacy of Unrefined Sweetness
Born from a simple idea in 2003, Hamungaya Farms began by transforming a riverbed into a small Muscovado mill. Founders-Spouses Felipe and Joyce Pachoco built the operation by hand, dedicated to producing pure, unrefined cane sugar (also known locally as MUSCOVADO Sugar) using centuries-old methods.
From the start, the farm established a unique tresya parte system, rooted in the Filipino spirit of Bayanihan (communal unity), where the community received its share of the harvest in kind, not cash. This ensured everyone had a stake in the farm's success and upheld the artisanal quality of the process.
Early upgrades, like better tanks and flooring, were made with a single goal: to improve hygiene and ensure sediment-free sugar while staying true to the traditional, non-centrifugal methods. By preserving the natural molasses, they were not just making sugar; they were crafting a true unrefined brown sugar—a healthier, more flavorful product compared to modern, chemically-refined alternatives.
The farm faced hardship, such as the widespread damage caused by Typhoon Frank in 2008, but the community's shared resolve to rebuild was a testament to their enduring commitment to their craft.
Today, Hamungaya Farms continues to expand, producing Raw Brown Sugar (or MUSCOVADO) that is rich in flavor and naturally higher in minerals. Their journey is a living testament to their core belief: Bayanihan Yields A Sweeter Life, one unrefined grain at a time.
Owned by the Pachoco family, Hamungaya Farms is a sole proprietorship in Belison, Antique, specializing in muscovado sugar.
Under the current management of siblings - Owner / General Manager: Ayn Fritzi Pachoco / Jan Sandino C. Pachoco, the farm spans 35 hectares and produces 90-100 tons of muscovado sugar annually.
Company's daily operations, which employ about 100 workers under the traditional bayanihan-based tresya-parte system.
They produce various grades of muscovado sugar, along with value-added products like candies and chips.
Their product line, which includes traditional treats like butong-butong and muscovado peanut bandi, is a testament to the farm's commitment to quality.
