Motivation and Healthy Adult Development Laboratory
NDSU MHAD Lab
Under the direction of Dr. Jeremy Hamm, the Motivation and Healthy Adult Development (MHAD) Laboratory studies how adults across the lifespan respond to stressful life experiences that can threaten health and well-being. This research program adopts a lifespan developmental psychology approach and is based on the premise that individual differences in personal agency and motivation govern successful adaptation for those who encounter stressful experiences and transitions. We focus on the role of core motivation processes, including personal beliefs (perceived control, attributions, expectations), discrete emotions (hope, excitement, regret), and behaviors (goal engagement strategies). We also focus on applications of motivation theory by developing interventions to foster health and well-being for those who struggle to adjust during stressful life transitions.
