Bringing Back the Why: the curiosity mindset
"How do we come up with new inventions? What helps us discover and achieve our goals? In this talk, Haley explores the power of curiosity for boosting innovation, fostering success, and promoting our personal health and happiness… and how we can cultivate a curious mindset in ourselves and in others."
This is a TEDx Talk that I gave not too long ago! Inspired by an airport bus ride and a 3-year-old kid...

My mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer earlier that year, and so I started Students Take on Cancer. This was my speech at the St. John's Annual Breast Symposium talking about my experience and launching our CoolTie fundraiser. We wanted to raise money to bring a Cancer Center to our local hospital. The new Cancer Center site opened in February 2020.

This is the pitch video that our Bright Pixel team submitted to the Technovation Challenge. The app was called BrightStop and would allow the user to find safe places to stop while driving.

A TV interview after winning StartUp Weekend Ventura County, talking about my idea and what it was like leading a team of adults.
Addendum: Since this interview, Spritely pivoted from addressing food allergies to helping people with cancer, using similar concepts as the ones used in the original idea for people with food allergies.
Here is a link to the press release about Spritely's win.

A piece I created for my visual art class for the theme of nature vs. technology. Created May 2020
I drew this picture as a small gift to a friend for their birthday! Created April 2019
A drawing that I made for my visual art class, trying to accurately depict a pair of my shoes (and then using color theory to color it in)! I can't tell which version I like better... Created April 2020
A little cartoon that I drew of myself while playing around with digital art! Created June 2020
I took inspiration from the recent wildfires in California while drawing this picture. I was thinking about the duality of fire -- how it can be a force of destruction and pain, but also a source of warmth, beauty, and hope. And thus I came up with a picture of little butterflies of fire being birthed from a limbs of a dying tree. (Full entry on blog page) Created 2020
I was inspired by the music video for "Ex" by Stray Kids, which is full of ghosts, flowers, symbolism, and a hauntingly tranquil atmosphere. The song itself is beautiful, one that you might put on to relax -- but the (translated) lyrics are incredibly sad. When I searched them up, one particular line stuck out in my mind: "I search for you in the midst of shattered memories//Even if I grab them, it just reminds me of your tears". It's a song full of pain and self-directed anger as the singer grapples with their mistake of letting go of someone important. The interplay of sweet melody, heartbreaking meaning and slightly unsettling visuals creates an experience that's hard for me to communicate but is extremely engaging. I tried to capture the video's sense of unsettling peace. (Full entry on blog page) Created 2020
The sunset today was so beautiful! As I was watching it, I was struck by the sudden thought that change -- even towards darker times -- can hold beauty and promise. My life might seem a little busy and chaotic right now, but taking a second to step back and just reflect on this transition from teenager to young adult reminds me to appreciate the moments I have now. It has been cold the last week (at least for Southern California standards) -- cold enough for me to wear sweatshirts and fuzzy socks inside the house and drink hot chocolate to stay warm! It feels like I haven't really experienced autumn this year -- or summer, for that matter -- but now that the days are getting cooler and shorter, I think it's finally sinking in that time is passing. We're transitioning from fall to winter and that change inspired this piece -- a girl taking the last apple off a tree before winter fully sets in. I wanted it to be warm and a little nostalgic -- I listened to a lot of happy and soft songs while drawing this. (Full entry on blog page.) Created 2020
I came up with this character at the beginning of quarantine to represent my state of mind... My first time working with digital art! Created May 2020
I was reading over my poem, "climb" (see below), and realized that I wanted to bring it to life through pictures as well as words. (Full entry on blog page) Created 2020
... it is finally starting to feel a bit like fall! October also holds a special place in my heart because it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I tried to combine the two themes into my artwork and ended up with something that feels uplifting and a little inspiring. ... I'm glad that I could create a sort of inner glow for the breast cancer survivor -- it's as if her inner strength is shining through! (Full entry on blog page) Created 2020
In a way, I feel like ramen is "my" food in my family -- I'm always the first one to suggest it when we're looking for somewhere to eat, and ever since I've been stuck at home, I've perfected the process of making my own (and eaten at least one bowl daily for the past month and a half). My parents have even given me ramen socks and a ramen shirt as gifts for my birthday! I definitely love the food, but I love what it represented even more -- I used to go out to eat ramen with my friends at summer camps and after debate tournaments with the rest of the team, so the hot soup wasn't the only thing that made me feel warm. I miss that part of the experience so much. (Full entry on blog page) Created 2020
I found a video of one of my piano performances when I was ten years old, playing a song called "Moonlight Memories". I had forgotten how calming and nostalgic it was! I kept imagining someone sitting in front of a window late at night because they can't sleep, reminiscing about old times....so I ended up drawing it. It's been a few years since I played piano and I kind of miss it! Of course there was a lot of practice involved, but it was so rewarding. I am learning to play the guitar and ukulele now...which are a little more portable than a piano! (Full entry on blog page). Created 2020

This project involved an original piece that my friend Lucy and I composed to reflect the story of Eva and Miriam Mozes, identical twins who survived the Mengele's experiments at Auschwitz. This was our first time composing music but I wanted to share it because it was very meaningful to us -- see our explication to the right.
The musical score is embedded below, and if you wish to hear it, click below: The Twins and click the play button in the upper left hand corner.

This was a fun article written for my AP English Language and Composition class, addressing the forces of polarization and the echo chambers that are increasingly permeating our society. A hat tip to the Dunning-Kruger effect as well!
October 2015
I wrote this creative writing piece when I was in 7th grade for an English assignment (thus the color-coded words)....more than two year before my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Uncanny foreshadowing.
I am sharing this because it so weird to read it now and see how much the emotions I imagined reflected what I really went through over two years later.
"RecoverLight is a new and innovative light fixture for use in hospitals. Scientific research shows that light has a large impact on our mood, and our overall well-being. Utilizing this research, RecoverLight adjusts the dimness and temperature of overhead lights according to the patient’s heart rate. By toning down the lights when the patient is tired and brightening them when the patient is alert, they believe their technology solution will greatly improve the patient’s comfort and satisfaction during their hospital stay. .... The students also made it possible for these features to be controlled by touch-free motion gestures to maximize hygiene and convenience in the patient room."
This was my first time being a "CEO" and I learned that entrepreneurship was not easy!! We were the first place team in the competition (see article to the right). Our rendering of the RecoverLight is below.
The original idea was to create an allergy app that would help people track their allergy symptoms and used AI to help them figure out what might be safe and what might help their symptoms. It would incorporate restaurant-specific menu recommendations and food scanning capabilities, as well as a crowdsourcing/community functionality. After my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, I pivoted the app to target cancer patients and their symptoms during treatment. The company has been incoporated as Spritely, Inc.
