Jan Bobek was born in Chicago in 1983. Following family tradition, he began taking violin lessons with his father at age nine. Soon thereafter, Jan started taking violin lessons from Aleksander Rępała and Bogdan Pawlikowski. Jan studied with Joseph Glymph at Northeastern Illinois University where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. He has performed with the Protege Philharmonic, Classical Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Espagnol, NEIU String Ensemble, Chicago Immigrant Orchestra and Chicago Metropolitan Orchestra in addition to being a regular soloist at private events throughout Chicago. In 2010 Jan received his Master's degree from Northeastern Illinois University in Educational Administration. Jan is also the founder of the Polish Highlander violin group Zawaternik. Jan is married to his best friend Bernadetta who plays violin and is co-leader of his Highlander group. Bernadetta and Jan have two sons, Philip and Oliver. Jan enjoys teaching, playing, arranging, composing music, woodworking, repairing instruments and spending time with his family. During 2007-2013 Jan was Orchestra Director at Lane Technical College Preparatory, Associate Orchestra Director at Adlai Stevenson High School and Professor of string pedagogy at Northeastern Illinois and North Park Universities. In 2013 Jan began his tenure as Orchestra, Guitar and Piano teacher at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park, Illinois.
Matthew Bobek, the 2nd violinist or “drugi głos” of Kapela Hajducy, began playing the violin at the age of 7 years old. He started his classical training with Aleksander Rempała and began taking Polish Highlander lessons with Bogdan Pawlikowski. Just three years after picking up the violin, his father took him to play on his first wedding at the age of 10. This was just the beginning of an amazing musical journey. Since the very beginning, he has played with his brother, Jan, the leader of the band. Aside from weddings, Matt has played in a church group for St. Stanislaus Kostka, the Chicago Immigrant Orchestra, and a variety of festivals and concerts alongside incredibly talented musicians. After several years playing the violin, he decided to try his hand at the upright bass. He learned quickly and continued to develop his skills on the bass over the years. His once “family band” continued to evolve into what is now Kapela Hajducy. When he is not performing, Matt is the Physical Education Department Chair at Lane Tech College Prep High School In Chicago, IL. He has a beautiful wife, Monica, a son, Jacob, and a daughter, Victoria.
Daniel, the youngest of the Bobek brothers, has been playing violin and singing since he was 6 years old. His older brothers were always what fueled him to play music. They provided a great learning environment that cultivated his musicianship into what you see today. He has played alongside his brothers in the family band since age 15 and many other Chicago folk musicians throughout the rest of his teenage years. During this time, he built a camaraderie with both Andy Zieba and Tom Kulawiak and now and they all play together in harmony. The music Kapela Hajducy performs not only inspired Daniel to preserve and nurture his cultural heritage but also inspired him to expand his horizons to others instruments and musical ventures such as receiving a degree in Audio Engineering and building his own music brand, ‘dB bobek’.
Andy Zieba is first generation of his family to be born in the United States. His family comes from the southern part (Podhale region) of Poland. He plays rhythmic cords on the Hungarian chord viola in Kapela Hajducy. Prior to playing with Hajducy he played with a number of different groups over the years. In addition to playing (Goralskie) Polish Highlander music, he also enjoys playing folk music of other eastern European countries. He plans to carry on this tradition for as long as he can.
Born and raised in Chicago, Tom Kulawiak has continued to embrace and upkeep the Polish Highlander tradition and music that has been in his family for generations. Initially exposed to folk music by his late grandpa at the age of five, Tom has been a part of a number of Chicagoland musical groups. This journey has brought him to his current role- upright bass player for Kapela Hajducy.
