Lesson Plan # 2: Mannequin Play
Ms. Aliya: What made you pick her?
Brianna: "She has curly hair like me." (Wavy)
Levi: "I really like her. She is Granny Rain." (Black, long hair)
Sophia: "I don’t like the curly hair. I don’t like her." (Short, black hair)
Ella: "I like how her face looks and how her hair looks." (Blond)
Judah: "I like her because she has really long hair." (Long, black hair)
Margot: "I just like this one. I don’t like that one, that one or that one." (Blond)
Ms. Aliya to Margot: "Why don’t you like them?" Margot:"I don’t know I just don’t like them."
Rhoda: "I like that she has curly hair." (Curly, long)
Amelia: "I like that she has long hair." (Long, straight)
Margot later ended up with the wavy head. “I’m gonna brush it so it’s straight.”
Ms. Aliya: "She has wavy hair."
Margot: "Maybe if I keep brushing it it’ll be straight. I’m gonna keep trying."

Lesson Plan # 3: Book Reading
The class read Emi’s Curly, Coily Cotton Candy Hair during circle time and while at free play the children decided to play beauty salon and did each others hair using magnatiles.
Lesson Plan # 3: Book Discussion across multiple days
Read I Love My Beautiful Hair and discussed the styles they liked at Circle Time. There was also discussion about when or if they had the same style as one in the book. On the page with the rollers Ms. Aliya asked if anyone knew what they were and one friend said they’re rollers and her grand mom wears them.
Read Don’t Touch My Hair and talked about the importance of respecting other people.
Read I Love My Natural Crown
Learned what “Natural Crown” is.
Ms. Aliya asked “who loves their natural crown?” Everyone raised their hand
Ms. Aliya then asked which style they loved from the book. Some of the children said they didn't like that people weren’t being nice to the girl in the book. There was discussion about different hair styles, and who has curly, straight, long or short hair.
After the discussion Ms. Aliya asked "what another word for this is?" (pointing to her head). Margot a child in the class answered “Natural crown!”
