This article is based on a ransomeware cyberattack at Howard University this cyberattack just occurred in September of 2021. This attack took a huge toll on med students since the University had to suspend all online classes and shut down the wifi. Residents on campus had to find other sources of wifi to continue their studies without falling too far behind. The University warned students about suspicious emails regarding making any payments to protect private information until the issue was resolved as the FBI investigated.
Due to Covid-19 the entire world was on a lockdown that caused everyone to stay home. Which meant a lot more people had free time on their hands. In the first 4 months of 2021 the FBI received 30,000 cases of identity fraud. Since so many people had to work from home it was easier for hackers to steal identity information.
When people get emails from the IRS, student financial aid, bank notification, and etc, they might think that it is a real email without looking further into it they could be potentially targeted by scammers. Many people are getting emails from the "IRS" which could frighten people since the IRS is pretty big deal. It is important for people to know that the IRS will never text, call or email you saying you owe something. The most important thing to do is never open any email links but to report them, and to never give out personal information over the phone, through email, and text messages. This cyberattack would be called spoofing simply getting emails from fake senders, this can affect many people if they are not aware of this situation.
