Robert "Bobby" Haigh
I started drawing in the classical style around age 7, started taking University drawing classes at age 8. I am an Abstract Expressionist. I am also a master printer and bookbinder by trade. I have been in the printing trade as a master journeyman since the age of 20. At my studio I teach classes in creative thinking also. I utilize recycled materials from the printing industry and manufacturing facilities, that are out dated and bring them back to life as art.
haighworks is a: Working artist's studio and Gallery. Printshop. Creative portal. Creative thinktank. Consultants for manufacturing workflow. Marketing and advertising. Art isn't so much to be judged as it is to be appreciated for the effort and the creative process that it spawned from.
When I was seven years old, I discovered a group of artists named the Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), formed in Munich, 1911. Seeing the images and reading the writings of this group opened my eyes as to what abstraction and movement and color were. As I grew older, I delved deeper into the style of Abstract Expressionism, inspired by artists such as, George Morrison, Paul Klee, Jim Rosenquist, Jackson Pollack, Willem DeKooning, Robert Rauschenberg. Once I found The New York School movement from the 1950's, there was no turning back. I knew I was going to dedicate my craft to the exploration, preservation, teaching of Abstract Expressionism. In my art, in my writing, my music, my processes, I embody the free flow of ideas images that leave lasting impressions on the viewer or listener.
I was born in St.Paul, MN, in the early 1970's our family moved to White Bear Lake, MN where I graduated high school in 1980. With high school over, I was finally free with no constraints, to go to college and seriously study, to become an artist. While at the University of Minnesota full time and then some,, I delved into art, art history and everything I could learn and absorb. I also worked a full time 40 hr job in the printing trade. which paid for my school so I didn't have to obtain any loans. While at the U of M I went on projects that took me all over the world, Russia, Middle East, Europe, India taking it all in. I also took classes at School of the Associated Arts (CVA) in St. Paul. I also had "squat studios in Lowertown in st. Paul and the warehouse District in Mpls. In 1987, I packed up a few items and my brushes and headed to NYC, with a plane ticket and $60 in my pocket. I went there with a job prospect at Pratt Institute and landed it within 2 days after arrival. Finally being where I wanted to be, I set up a "squat" studio in a vacant warehouse along the East River with some mates who where as serious as I was. I moved back to the Twin Cities in 2013 to be apart of what was happening in Mpls./St.Paul Art scene once again. Since my return, I have shown at the St. Paul Art crawls, Art-A-Whirl, Show gallery in St. Paul, Demonstrated at St. Paul Public Libraries, an Annual Halloween and Valentines Day show at NKB in Mpls, I belong to the St. Paul Art Collective and still participate in the Armory Show in NYC. I also have my work in galleries and private collections in Mexico, Chicago, Boston,NYC, L.A., Denver,Atlanta, Phoenix, Miami to name a few as well as here in the Twin Cities.
I currently have my studio space at the Creators Space in St. Paul, MN. I am also the curator for the Gallery.
