There are 5 types of projects:
Experiment using the scientific method - in this type of project, you develop a hypothesis and test it by gathering data. NOTE: 4th and 5th graders must use the scientific method and present an experiment. The other options below are allowed for grades K-3.
Demonstration - this type of project shows a scientific process at work, but there's no question; you already know what will happen
Collection - this type of project is a set of related items, like rocks, shells, leaves, etc. You can discuss groups or types of items.
Apparatus - this type of project explains a tool used by scientists, like a telescope, microscope, or chemistry set
Research - this type of project presents something you learned about science from books, websites, etc. (the difference between "research" and an "experiment" is that an experiment involves collecting your own data)
