Dr. Bryan Shumaker and Pete Pfeiffer started this club in February 2023 with 33 members interested. We both have a keen interest in different Astronomy aspects. Our goal is to provide a safe, friendly environment to learn about and view the Night Sky Wonders in the Tucson area. We welcome all residents regardless of equipment or experience.
Bryan Shumaker
Dr. Bryan Shumaker taught astronomy and basic optical physics at Oakland University for a brief time and ran the small observatory there. He also is a recently retired board certified urologist,. Combining both areas of study, he co-developed a unique bladder cancer laser sensing device for which he was honored by the International Astronomical Union with the designation of an asteroid—518523bryanshumaker.
Dr. Shumaker is an adjunct Professor of Physics (Astronomy) at Oakland University, and a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador (outreach education). In his leisure time oversees the astronomy program at the Headlands International Dark Sky Park in Mackinaw City and is the founder and president of the Northern Michigan Astronomy Club (NOMAC).
Pete Pfeiffer
Pete spent 12 years in the US Navy as an electronics technician assigned to a Ground Control Approach (GCA) team at NAS Weymouth MA. After the Navy he was instrumental installing the network between Washington DC New York Times remote office bureau and the Times in NYC.
His astronomy interest started with the Super Moon in 2011 and has grown ever since. He retired from Freddie Mac in 2010 and moved to Marana in 2017 with his wife of 53 years from Centreville, Va. When his daughter and son were in high school he helped lead both the Girl & Boy Scout Troops. He's also is very involved with the Highlands Photography.
