If you want a rugged, submersible pair of in-ear headphones built for swimming and high-intensity water sports, choose H2O Audio Surge Waterproof Sport; if you need open-back over-ear headphones designed for critical listening at home or in a quiet office while studying, choose Philips Open Back.
These two devices sit on opposite ends of the audio spectrum. One is a specialized tool for athletes who demand durability against sweat, rain, and total submersion, while the other is an audiophile-grade instrument prioritizing soundstage, detail retrieval, and long-session comfort. You cannot use them interchangeably. The H2O Audio Surge is a workhorse that thrives in chaos, whereas the Philips Open Back is a refined listener's companion that demands silence to perform its best.
• H2O Audio Surge Waterproof Sport: Its biggest strength is the IPX8 waterproof rating allowing complete submersion up to 12 feet, making it ideal for lap swimming and extreme weather workouts. Its trade-off is the lack of wireless connectivity, requiring a wired connection and offering no active noise cancellation beyond passive isolation. This pick is for the athlete who needs music to survive the pool or the storm.
• Philips Open Back: Its biggest strength is the large 50mm drivers and open-back design that deliver a wide soundstage with pristine highs and balanced mids, perfect for detailed music appreciation and focus. Its trade-off is zero water resistance and significant sound leakage, meaning they are useless outdoors or around others without disturbing them. This pick is for the student or home listener who values sonic accuracy above all else.
The H2O Audio Surge Waterproof Sport is engineered specifically for the active individual who refuses to let the elements interrupt their routine. If your primary goal is to listen to music while swimming laps, running in heavy rain, or engaging in water sports like surfing or paddle boarding, this device is the only logical choice. This isn't just splash resistance; it is a guarantee of functionality even when fully underwater.

For the serious swimmer, the design includes five sets of earplugs ranging from XS to XL, along with three sets of tree tip earplugs. This variety ensures a watertight seal regardless of ear shape, which is critical for keeping water out and bass in. The dynamic driver technology is tuned to produce warm, deep bass response even under pressure, and the speaker shape sits flush with the ear to promote proper alignment during movement. Whether you are in a chlorinated pool or the ocean, the Surge+ delivers a consistent audio experience that standard consumer electronics simply cannot match.
However, this product is not for everyone. Because it relies on a 3.6-foot wired connection via a 3.5 mm jack, it offers no Bluetooth freedom. If you are looking for open ear earbuds for study sessions where you need to hear your surroundings or connect wirelessly to a phone, this will feel restrictive. The sound isolation provided by the tight seal is excellent for blocking out wind and water noise, but it also isolates you completely from your environment. If you plan to wear these while jogging on a busy street or cycling in traffic, the lack of ambient awareness could be dangerous. Furthermore, the "Go Beyond Promise" warranty covers durability for one year, but the physical build is strictly for sport, not for casual, all-day lounging.
In stark contrast, the Philips Open Back is designed for the person who sits still and listens deeply. These over-ear headphones feature an acoustic system that is open, meaning sound waves escape the ear cups rather than being trapped inside. This design choice creates a natural, spacious soundstage that mimics listening to speakers in a room, which is why they are often preferred for studying, gaming, or mixing audio. The large 50mm neodymium drivers cover a massive frequency range from 12 Hz to 35,000 Hz, ensuring that every detail in a recording—from the lowest rumble of a kick drum to the highest shimmer of a cymbal—is reproduced with clarity.
Comfort is a central pillar of the Philips design. With a weight of just 11.68 ounces and a double-layered headband cushion reinforced with durable steel, these headphones are built for marathon listening sessions. The breathable ear-cup cushions allow air to circulate, preventing the heat buildup common with closed-back models. This makes them an excellent choice for long study blocks where you might be wearing them for hours at a time. The included 3-meter cable with gold-plated connectors and a 1/4 inch to 3.5 mm adapter suggests a setup meant for a dedicated desk, TV, or PC, connecting directly to high-quality audio sources for the purest signal path.
Yet, the open-back nature dictates exactly where you can use them. They offer no noise control and zero isolation. If you try to use these in a coffee shop, on a bus, or even in a house with a noisy roommate, you will hear everything happening around you, and everyone around you will hear your music. They are not suitable for calls unless you have a very quiet environment, as the microphone quality is not specified for clear calls in noisy settings. If you are looking for crystal clear calls kids headphones for study environments where background noise is present, these will struggle. They are strictly for controlled environments where you can enjoy the full fidelity of the music without distraction or disturbance.

• Best for outdoor safety → Neither, but H2O Audio offers better isolation while Philips allows more ambient hearing (though both require caution).
• Best for stationary desk setups → Philips Open Back, optimized for connecting to TVs, PCs, and stereo systems via the included long cable.
After weighing the specifications and intended use cases, I would buy the Philips Open Back for my personal study setup. The ability to immerse myself in a wide soundstage without fatigue is crucial for long periods of concentration and learning. While the H2O Audio Surge is an incredible piece of engineering for swimmers, its limitations regarding connectivity and environmental isolation make it too niche for general daily use. If your priority is to find the best bone conduction headphones for study—though these are actually dynamic drivers, not bone conduction—the Philips model offers the clarity and comfort required to stay focused for hours. However, if your life revolves around the pool or the gym, the H2O Audio Surge remains the undisputed champion. For anyone needing crystal clear calls kids headphones for study, neither is a perfect fit, but the Philips offers the stability needed for a quiet study environment. Ultimately, the Philips wins for the academic and home listener, while the H2O Audio reigns supreme for the athlete.
No, the Philips Open Back headphones have an open-back design that leaks sound and lets external noise in, making them poor for noisy public spaces. The H2O Audio Surge offers isolation but is wired and bulky for such settings.
The product information does not list a built-in microphone or call controls, focusing instead on media control and direct audio output for music and podcasts.
The H2O Audio Surge focuses on warm, dynamic bass and isolation for water sports, while the Philips Open Back targets a broad frequency response (12Hz-35kHz) with a natural, spacious soundstage for critical listening.
