What is JSI?
The Jerrell Steele Invitational is our home meet that was established by Gym Quest Gymnastics to honor their great friend and fellow Coach, Jerrell Steele, who was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident on June 17, 2001.
How do gymnasts benefit from the JSI?
Proceeds from the JSI are shared with athletes in a number of ways that decrease costs for parents. First, participation in this event is free for all Gym Quest team members. Second, proceeds are used to pay for coaching costs related to coaching our athletes during competitions all season; such as training, session fees, travel expenses, meals and hotel expenses. Instead of each parent paying several hundred dollars per athlete for these costs, DAG pays and reimburses the coaches. Third, DAG has a history of gifting equipment and resources to Gym Quest, such as parallel bars, beams and mats. And finally, reserved earnings may be used to support athletes in other ways, such as paying the entry fee for all Gym Quest Team members in a selected competition. All athletes and parents benefit from these efforts!
What are parent requirements for JSI?
VOLUNTEER: Parent, family & friends volunteer participation is the key to the success of the meet/fundraiser, so parent/family participation is required. Types of volunteer activities include event timing, athlete check-in, ticket sales, hospitality, setup and teardown, and more. By volunteering just one weekend, you benefit in all of the ways listed above. The number of family hours required will be set each season based on the needs for the meet. Family and friends can help towards working the required minimum hours. The volunteer signup will be distributed about 30 days prior to the meet.
SERVE ON A COMMITTEE: Each family is expected to participate on at least one JSI committee. Identify your volunteer interest areas for the Jerrell Steele meet by clicking here.
SECURE SPONSORS and/or PROGRAM ADS: Each family is requested to submit at least one Program Ad or Sponsor for the meet. Click here for more information and download a copy of the SPONSOR PACKAGE or PROGRAM AD FORM.
What if my family does not meet the minimum volunteer hours and requirements for JSI?
If volunteer hours are not completed by a family, there will be an Assessment Fee of $700 to cover coach training & competition expenses for the season. If the gymnast competes in the JSI meet, they will also be responsible for paying the JSI meet fee. If you know that you have a conflict for the JSI weekend there are ways to contribute before the event occurs; please email the Volunteer Coordinator at DAGatGQ@gmail.com by October 1st to request this exception.
