If you want a lightweight, trunk-mounted solution for quick weekend trips with up to three bikes, choose GYMAX Bike Rack; if you need a heavy-duty hitch carrier that handles four bikes with zero sway and offers dedicated access to your vehicle's rear, choose GOEHNER's Bike Rack Hitch.
• Who picks GYMAX: Ideal for drivers of sedans, hatchbacks, and minivans who prioritize storage space and portability over maximum bike capacity.
• Who picks GOEHNER: Best for SUV and truck owners hauling four bikes or heavy cargo who demand rock-solid stability and easy trunk access without removing the rack.
The GYMAX Bike Rack is designed for the driver who values simplicity and versatility above all else. Because it mounts directly to the trunk rather than requiring a tow hitch, it opens up cycling possibilities for those who drive smaller vehicles like sedans or hatchbacks that might not have a receiver hitch installed. The design philosophy here is clearly about accessibility and ease of use. With an overall dimension of 28 inches by 13 inches by 25 inches when deployed, it creates a stable platform for three bikes, provided they have cross bars. This specific requirement for cross-bar frames is a crucial detail; if your bikes rely solely on top tubes or unique frame geometries, this rack will not be compatible without additional adapters.
One of the most compelling aspects of this unit is its physical footprint when not in use. The folding design allows the entire structure to collapse down to just 8 inches in height, reducing the profile from 25 inches to a mere 8 inches. This low weight makes lifting the rack into and out of a vehicle a non-issue for almost anyone, whereas heavier alternatives can become a genuine chore. The adjustable supporting arms add another layer of utility, offering three height levels (18, 20, or 22 inches) and two length options (17 or 19 inches). You can rotate these arms 180 degrees to accommodate different vehicle shapes and bike sizes, ensuring a snug fit even if your car has a slightly irregular trunk contour.
However, you must be realistic about where this product fits in your life. The 99-pound weight capacity is the hard ceiling here. If you plan to haul fat-tire bikes, e-bikes, or multiple adult-sized mountain bikes that push the total weight near or over that limit, this rack simply cannot support them safely. Furthermore, the design explicitly excludes vehicles with rear spoilers, which limits its compatibility for some modern crossover or sports car owners. While the double safety guarantee includes six high-strength straps and an extra safety strap to secure your gear, the reliance on trunk straps means you must be meticulous during installation to prevent scratches. The protective sponge pads help, but the friction points are still inherent to the mounting method. This is a fantastic choice for the casual cyclist who wants to take their road or hybrid bikes to a local trail, but it is not built for heavy-duty, year-round hauling.

GOEHNER's Bike Rack Hitch targets a completely different user persona: the serious outdoor enthusiast or family that needs to transport more gear with absolute confidence. That is more than double the capacity of the GYMAX model, allowing you to carry four bikes simultaneously without worrying about structural flex or bending. The powder-coated finish is specifically noted for resisting rust and road salt, suggesting this unit is built to withstand harsh winter conditions or coastal driving environments where corrosion is a constant threat. If you live in an area where snow removal is part of your routine, the durability of this steel construction is a major advantage over lighter, less robust alternatives.
The engineering focus here is heavily placed on stability and convenience. The anti-rattle hitch stabilizer cinches tightly into a 2-inch receiver to eliminate any play or wobble while driving. There is no clunking, no shaking, and no need to constantly check your rearview mirror to ensure your bikes are secure. This level of rigidity is critical when traveling at highway speeds with a full load. Additionally, the dual anti-sway system combines contoured rubber cradles with high-performance tie-down straps tested for over 10,000 cycles. This ensures that the bikes do not rub against each other or the vehicle, protecting both your investment in the bicycles and your car's paint. The inclusion of a pin-lock tilt mechanism is another standout feature; it allows you to pivot the rack downward to access your trunk or tailgate without having to remove the entire unit from the hitch.
The trade-offs for this performance are physical size and vehicle requirements. It also mandates that your vehicle is equipped with a 2-inch receiver hitch, ruling out sedans and many smaller crossovers that lack this attachment point. However, for those who own trucks or large SUVs, the weight becomes a non-issue because the hitch provides the leverage needed to lift it. The dimensions of 28 by 16 by 4 inches when folded show that it is compact enough for wall storage, yet the unfolded size is substantial enough to hold four bikes securely. This is the tool for someone who treats biking as a primary mode of recreation rather than an occasional hobby, prioritizing capacity and security over minimal weight.
• Best for maximum bike capacity → GOEHNER's Bike Rack Hitch, supporting four bikes versus the GYMAX limit of three.
• Best for vehicle flexibility → GYMAX Bike Rack, as it mounts to trunks and works on sedans and minivans without a hitch.
• Best for trunk access while loaded → GOEHNER's Bike Rack Hitch, featuring a tilt mechanism that clears the vehicle opening.
• Best for long-term durability → GOEHNER's Bike Rack Hitch, utilizing welded steel and rust-resistant coatings backed by a 3-year warranty.
• Best for anti-sway performance → GOEHNER's Bike Rack Hitch, utilizing a stabilizer system that eliminates wobble and frame contact.
• Best for budget-friendly mobility → GYMAX Bike Rack, ideal for those who do not need to haul heavy e-bikes or multiple bikes at once.
After analyzing the specifications and real-world application of both units, I would personally choose the GOEHNER's Bike Rack Hitch for my own needs. The tilt feature alone saves hours of frustration when trying to get groceries out of the trunk after a ride. Most importantly, the heavy-duty steel construction and rust-resistant coating make this the superior choice for durability, especially if you plan to use it for snow removal or year-round outdoor activities where exposure to the elements is inevitable. While the GYMAX is excellent for occasional use, the GOEHNER is the robust workhorse that handles the toughest jobs without compromising safety.
Most e-bikes exceed this weight limit and often have step-through frames, making this rack incompatible and unsafe for such bikes.
Yes, the GOEHNER's model is designed exclusively for a 2-inch receiver hitch. It will not fit a 1.25-inch receiver, so you must verify your vehicle has the correct 2-inch receiver before purchasing.
Yes, the powder-coated finish is specifically designed to resist rust and road salt, making it durable enough to remain mounted during winter conditions, unlike many standard racks that may corrode quickly.
The GYMAX features adjustable supporting arms that can move to different mounting holes, offering three height levels and two length settings to adapt to various trunk contours, though it cannot fit vehicles with rear spoilers.
