Operating on the belief that integrating academic and social-emotional skills creates an environment where students can do their best learning, I am always eager to support the professional growth of educators and paraprofessionals that leads to culturally responsive practices leads to authentic relationships, student experiences, and pedagogy that strengthens student engagement and nurtures a culture where the words and actions of adults communicate a commitment to belonging, safety, significance and joy.
Social Emotional Learning Course
I created an online course to introduce educators to Social Emotional Learning in Virginia Beach City Public Schools. The purpose of the course was to facilitate teachers' thinking around the following guiding question:
What steps will I take to support student learning by purposefully linking social-emotional competencies and related skills with academic growth?

A Menu of Options
I enjoy providing options for when, where, how and with whom adults engage professional growth experiences. This menu gave teachers a variety of options for self-directed learning based on their needs, goals, and interests.
The menu gave my colleagues the opportunity to schedule time with me based on their availability, needs, and levels of proficiency. It also provided many opportunities for groups and teams of teachers to learn together on their own or with me as their facilitator.
