In Person
I am taking up to 4 students in grades 4 and 5 whose caregivers are interested in having their students tutored as a group.
Free, web-based technology tools will be utilized during tutoring sessions. Following the tutoring sessions, I will share the links to the online tools we used. Students can practice and explore math anytime.
Math connects to real life. Word problems (also called practical problems) are a must if students are to truly see and understand math. Using the Virginia Department of Education standards, I will help students learn strategies for organizing their thoughts as they solve word problems, even multi-step problems that require several steps to arrive at a solution. Practical problems are mentioned several times in the Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning fo reach grade level.
I use math materials to support students with Math "Show and Tell".
One of Virginia's Mathematics Process Goals is Mathematical Representations. "Students will understand that representations of mathematical ideas are an essential part of learning, doing, and communicating mathematics."
I enjoy helping students see the power in using math materials to organize their thoughts as they prepare to talk about math and explain their strategies.
If my schedule does not work for you, I highly recommend Wendy Barrett. Wendy works with students in all things elementary, not just mathematics.
