What is Civic Debate?
Civic debate uses debate as a tool for engagement, service and publication. By participating in civic debate competitions, students have opportunities to contribute to global civil society while developing essential professional and civic skills. Civic debate also offers GWU students the opportunity to develop their resumes through internships at leading national and international organizations, to participate in once-in-a-lifetime experiences supporting global debate education, and to earn academic credit and scholarships for their work as society members.
The Social Justice Debates are an annual intercollegiate debate series founded by Morehouse College and The George Washington University. The only intercollegiate debate series in the world dedicated to social justice topics, the Social Justice Debates aspire to promote productive and rigorous debates challenging current and future thought leaders to consider issues of justice in relation to the distribution of wealth, opportunity, and privilege in U.S. society.
Founded by Ecole de Guerre and The George Washington University, Transatlantic Dialogues for Future Leaders is an annual intercollegiate dialogue series bringing together US and European university students to analyze and discuss important transatlantic topics.
The Schuman Challenge is an annual competition organized by the Delegation of the European Union to the United States in which teams of undergraduate students respond to a topic impacting transatlantic relations and present and defend their response before a panel of senior topic stakeholders. Since its founding, our society has partnered with the Elliott School of International Affairs to organize GW’s entry, including the 2021 Schuman Challenge Champions!
In line with GWDebate’s dedication to service learning, students from our team volunteer with the public-forum debate team at School Without Walls, a high school located on The George Washington University campus. A senior member of our team, Marielle Cornes, is currently the coach for the School Without Walls debate team. Other members help her coordinate practice debates, lectures, and other forms of debate education to give back to the debate community.
GWDebate partnered with Sidwell Friends School to offer a unique 6-week course focused on teaching middle school students the fundamentals of debate, including researching, public speaking skills, and developing argumentation. Founded by a former Society member, the course focuses on developing confidence and lifelong public speaking skills that will carry through students' school age years into their careers.
