Work with vocal instructor and composer Sarah M. Greer
to develop her new improvised vocal workÂ
(It will answer many of your questions 😉)
Thank you for singing with me this semester.
To close out our singing work this semester, we will share/present a 5-minute version of Giving Voice to Grief  during the Minneapolis College spring choir concert. This event is FREE and open to the public; you are very welcome to invite/bring family and friends.Â
We will have a final gathering/singing session from 4-5pm on Friday 5/3. This will give us time to do some grounding, singing, and planning in the theater space. Please note, Jack will back to capture more video footage during this hour so please wear what you'll wear for the concert to this session if possible.Â
Date: Friday, May 3rd, 2024
Location: Theater in the Irene Whitney Fine Arts Building (building F), 1424 Yale Place, Minneapolis.Â
Call time: 4pm for final session. We will walk through the logistics of how we'll come on and off stage, maybe do a quick vocal/improv warm-up. Then we'll sing with some of the cards so we can practice it (and Jack can film it).Â
Downbeat: 7pm   COMMUNITY SINGERS - PLEASE CHECK INTO GREEN ROOM BY 7PM, READY TO PERFORM BETWEEN 7:30- 8PM.Â
Choir Students: please follow choir instructions regarding call times.Â
Green Room
We will have the use of the theater’s green room, which you acces from backstage. Please put bags, coats, and other personal items in the green room. In other words, please do NOT leave the items in the theater.Â
Getting On & Off Stage
(For those not singing in the concert (c: ) We will convene and listen backstage or in the green room as the choir concert begins and enter from backstage when it is time for us to share. Note we are the 5th item on the program (about a third of the way through the 90 minute concert). Choir singers, please exit backstage when the choir exits. After we sing, we will ALL exit backstage. Community singers, if you would like to watch the remainder of the concert, you can reach an external hallway from back stage to exit and circle around to the lobby to re-enter the theater.Â
What to WearÂ
Students: please wear CONCERT BLACK.Â
Community singers: please dress similarly in black and white
CONCERT BLACK: all black – gender neutral. Black long-sleeved blouse, dress shirt (with black buttons) or sweater; black pants, skirt or dress. Black tights, black nylons, or black socks – no bare legs. Sport coat or jacket and tie are also options, but, again, all black. Black jeans are ok if they are not faded or ripped. Black dress shoes (no sneakers, work boots, etc.) Jewelry should be minimal (no sequins/rhinestones). Skirts should be knee-length or longer, necklines should be moderate. If you choose to mask, please wear a black mask.Â
The choir will exit the stage before we enter. As we enter, we will carry on the table, the bowl with the cards and perhaps a few more small tokens/items (scarf, faux candle, etc.) to place on the table.Â
We will stand in a formation that allows us to see and enage one another. It is not critical to face our listeners, but no one will have their back to the front of the stage.Â
Sarah will give a brief introduction, then we will draw our cards and sing/sound. My goal is for us to center our experience of sounding over performing for those listening. Â
At the end of our sounding, we will hold a 1-minute silence to allow the piece to settle. The silence will end with a chime (singing bowl?) and then (if we have time/it feels right), we can each read our prompt.Â
Each person will collect the item they carried out and we will exit backstage. (Choir members, check with Liz about if she wants you to exit or wait on stage for the other members to return.)
The recital hall is in the Irene Whitney Fine Arts Building (building F) – 1424 Yale Place is the building address. The most straightforward approach would be to park at a meter on Yale Place. Meters are $.50 an hour until 6pm but can be hard to find on event nights.
Students: If you park in the ramp, you will need to cross campus to get to the theater building (F). Parking in the ramp costs $5. (Students can add money to their ID badges and then the cost is $2.50 to park in the ramp.)Â
From the parking ramp (or Hennepin Avenue), it is most direct to cut across the quad by walking outside, but you can also reach the F building by traveling through the skyway. Here is a link to the campus map: https://minneapolis.edu/about-us/maps-hours-parking
