Welcome to my personal website!
I am a Doctoral researcher (PhD) in the Land Economics Group at the University of Bonn , Germany, and a STARS Fellow at Cornell University, USA. I was also a 2025 Africa Fellow at the World Bank, Washington, USA. My research focuses on assessing whether and under which conditions public policies are effective in mitigating cropland degradation using econometric methods and remote sensing data (at a global level). Beside this, I conduct studies on topics related to extension services, land rehabilitation, drought resilience, labor market and cluster farming in the context of Ethiopia. In general, I have a keen interest in various research areas, such as policy evaluation, food security and poverty, agricultural transformation and rural development, climate change, and sustainable development. I'm particularly interested in the application of econometric causal inferences, machine learning techniques, and satellite remote sensing data (and household survey data) to the evaluation of development interventions and policies at the local, regional, and global levels.
Prior to starting my PhD, I received a double masters degree in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis from the University of Bonn, Germany, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Science, Sweden, through a prestigious Erasmus scholarship program. I also hold a BA degree in Economics from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, where I earned an outstanding student gold model award from the same University and best BA in Economics thesis award from the Ethiopian Economics Association.
Professionally, I worked at Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation agency (ATA) as a senior research analyst and at Center for Evaluation and Development (C4ED) as Quantitative research manager. I have extensive experience with large-scale data collection and analysis including household level RCT, field operations, quantitative research analysis and reports, in Ethiopia and Malawi. I am also familiar with the use of contemporary data analysis packages such as Microsoft Office, Stata, R, CAPI software packages (KoboToolbox, SurveyCTO and Surveysolutions) and basic Python, inter alia.
I have consulted for the World Bank, FAO, GIZ, HWG, and WFP, among others.
