Being outdoors no matter what time of year is fun to me. I love the rain, snow and that may make me a bit crazy. But can all of this still be done when you have a stoma? This brings me to think about all the fun that is to come and all the outdoor time that will be spent. Even will all the activity ahead it is important to think about your ostomy gear if you have a stoma. There is a lot of activity that happens and it may not only be outdoors on walks and hikes but with lots of small kids going crazy at family and holiday parties. I think it is important to think and plan through problems, issues, or leaks. You never know when a toddler will attack and maybe get close to taking out your ostomy bag. We all know that life is wild but having a nice stoma guard can help take care of so many issues too.
Now if it is cold and you may be away from the real world for a bit you need to actually be prepared. Things can happen so having the gear to overcome issues makes my mind feel better and confident. I generally change up what I am carrying my gear in and that depends on the location. I like to use a nice and lightweight backpack for the trails to store an extra day of gear for my stoma in case something goes wrong. I find a nice lightweight backpack and keeping all my gear in a waterproof bag is a smart thing to have. I do something similar as well for family get-togethers. Although I like to put it all in an opaque waterproof bag in my leather messenger bag. No one ever knows I carry extra ostomy gear with me and I feel happy because if something goes wrong, I have an emergency bag of gear and sanitary supplies to make quick work of any issues. I also carry a pair of shorts and a t-shirt as well. There is nothing wrong with being smart and prepared. Bad things happen, do you have kids? Then you know it's better to be prepared.
Just know what works well for you and test it. I like to take the time to try new gear and test it really well before using it. I prefer to take time a few months before the holidays to call up my favorite manufacturers and see if anything new is in. If there is something that may be better for my body I like to give it a try and test it out in very active environments. If it works well then I feel better about being around chaos and family. I enjoy finding out if anything is new as well. Go ahead and hop online and see what is new and what is trending. It can be a huge help.
No doubt social media can be bad, but it can also help you find new gear that can change your life. Follow those with a stoma and learn from their failures on what worked well for them and also just how to have a great fun lifestyle. I like motivation especially from people who live differently from me and do different things. So have a great time on your next wild outdoor adventure.
