"A brain injury is one of the biggest challenges a family can face, and I'm honored to care for them and support them during this difficult time. As a physician, I strive to give each child the best possible care, and to help families make important medical decisions and find comfort and resilience. As a researcher, I'm driven to understand the brain's mysteries and to find new ways to protect it so more children can lead happy, healthy lives."
Postdoctoral Fellow
Hyun-Kyoung received PhD in neuroscience from Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea. Her doctoral research focused on investigation of altered neurovascular coupling in epilepsy, and on how impaired cerebrovascular function influences the pathogenesis of epilepsy. She has developed her expertise and skills in in vivo brain microscopic imaging through neurovascular research at the Center for Neuroscience of Imaging Research (CNIR) within the same university. Her current research interest is on how changes in brain endothelium impact interactions between leukocytes and neurovascular unit during neuroinflammation and brain pathology. Her current research aims to uncover the mechanisms underlying cerebrovascular dysfunction associated with neurotoxicity induced by CAR-T cell therapy.
When she's not immersed in science, she enjoys outdoor adventures in nature's playground. She particularly loves carving through snowy slopes on a snowboard during winter. (She also finds great joy in building muscles at the gym.)
Research Technician II
Annie graduated from the University of Washington with a B.S. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. Her research consists of a variety of topics including the characterization of immune cell populations within our murine CART model as well as the development of a new murine brain tumor model that will be used to study the efficacy of CART treatment on solid tumor.
When Annie isn't knee deep in reading research papers, she enjoys going to concerts.

Research Technician I
Maha recieved her BS in Biochemistry and Microbiology from the University of Washington in 2023 and joined the lab the following November. Her research focuses on adapting a quantitative multiplex immunoprecipitation panel into a mouse model in order to better understand the mechanisms behind CART related neurotoxicity in an intracellular context.
When not trapped in the tissue culture room, Maha enjoys watching K-dramas and reading murder mysteries.
Graduate Student - University of Washington M3D Program
Niki received her B.S. in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior from the University of California, Davis. After college, she began her research in hematopoietic stem cell regeneration and bone marrow niche interactions. She then moved to Seattle in 2022 to help her mentor start up her lab at Fred Hutch Cancer Center. Through her research, she became passionate about connecting the research that was being done at the bench to the bedside in clinics through therapeutic development and intervention. In 2024, she began her PhD at the University of Washington Molecular Medicine and Mechanisms of Disease program and joined the Gust Lab in May 2025. Her current research aims to better understand the key players within a healthy brain and brain tumor microenvironments in hopes of better understanding how these cells can be manipulated to aid current glioma therapeutics or develop new ones.
When she is not in lab, you can find Niki at a concert, gaming with friends, or cuddling with her cat. You can also find her crafting one of her many projects whether it's her coloring projects, cross stitching, or punch needling.
Research Technician II / Lab Manager
Lina received her BS in Neuroscience from the University of Washington and has joined the lab in 2022. Her research focuses on the leukocyte adhesion interactions and cortical capillary plugging during neurotoxicity associated with CAR T cell therapy.
Outside of the lab, she spends time playing with her dog, Kai, enjoys hiking, and watches ballets.
Lina is now attending medical school at Washington State University! Congrats Lina!
