Precious Twin
Located in front of the Multicultural Center in the Cabrillo College Aptos campus in California, Precious Twin is a ceramic sculpture with a message and reminder that as humans we are sacred reflections of each other and this natural world. In all of us exists duality that needs to be balanced for us to coexist in harmony. Created with an organic approach, the sculpture draws inspiration from my experiences on the site of the sculpture and throughout campus. Through observation and walks, many insights presented themselves to me. A pivotal moment in the sculpture’s development was a conversation with a blue jay and an encounter with two deer on the same day I asked the land for permission to create something as a gift.
Student involvement was crucial to the organic development of the idea and concept, from design to creation. The conversations with students during the project served as reminders of the importance of sharing our personal stories that connect to universal experiences and emotions. The sculpture features intertwining forms that symbolize complementary opposing forces in nature, evoking a sense of upward movement and growth—mirroring the journey of students as they pursue higher education and expand their horizons.
