Dr. Gusman Nawanir views teaching as both a professional responsibility and an act of worship (‘ibadah). He believes that education is not limited to the transfer of knowledge but must also cultivate faith, integrity, and excellence (iḥsān). Guided by the Qur’anic principle in QS. Yā Sīn: 12, “Indeed, We bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind”, he recognizes that every teaching effort is recorded by Allah ﷻ as a lasting contribution. Also inspired by the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ — “When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him” (Sahih Muslim, 1631) — Dr. Gusman views the dissemination of beneficial knowledge (‘ilm nāfi‘) as a form of ṣadaqah jāriyah (continuous charity).
In practice, his teaching emphasizes learning-by-doing, critical reflection, and ethical professionalism, integrating Islamic values such as ikhlāṣ (sincerity), amanah (trustworthiness), and ta‘āwun (collaboration). He aims to nurture not only capable graduates but also responsible and God-conscious individuals (‘abid and khalifah) who use their knowledge for the betterment of society.
