Q. 1 What is smog tower ?

Smog tower is a structure designed to work as a large-scale air purifier, fitted with multiple layers of filters which trap fine dust particles suspended in the air as it passes through them. The polluted air purified by the multiple layers before re-circulated into the atmosphere. The small size particles, which are very hazardous for human health, cause carcinogenic health effect, hence its necessary to have such technology which can capture particles from air in large extent and smog tower is effective for that.

Q. 2 Mention the various smog tower design already available?

The first such tower was erected in 2015, in Rotterdam, Beijing, created by Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde. This smog tower capable to purify air of 30000-meter cube per hour. The major component of smog tower contains purification, suction and monitoring unit. The china smog tower design in 2019 are based on capture the polluted air from ground surface and it move through fabric filter by using solar energy and finally filter air send to the atmosphere from top side. it is capable to purify 41000-meter cube per hour. In last month, the Delhi government installed US based technology smog tower in area Anand Vihar Delhi with cost of 20 crore. This design currently under operation condition and will be capable to purify air of 1000 meter cube per second.

Q. 3 What are the research gaps in present design ?

a) The smog tower designs are mostly failed in the filtration unit because of high-pressure drops in the filtration process.

b) Blockage and easily damage of the filters, moisture absorption in filters.

c) A manual setting is required to change the used filters.

d) Less flexibility in the design for adopting a seasonal variation.

e) Static structure and fixed space required

f) More power consumption and maintenance required

g) High noise, vibrations and short circuit problems

h) Required huge cost.


Q. 4 What are the objectives for your new smog tower design?

The design will be implemented with various objective such flexible design with small space occupancy, automatic filter change mechanism, long time working capacity, moving setup, automation in process according to season and atmospheric conditions, energy efficient and less maintenance and less costly.

Our research plan is depicted in given flow charts. We are trying to develop the smog tower design, which can able to purify air in large extent with long time working capacity, energy efficient and cost effective.
