A sixteen year old that refers to himself as A narrates his experiences waking up as a different person each day for 41 consecutive days. The first day he narrates, he wakes up as Justin and unintentionally falls in love with his girlfriend, Rihannon. This creates a pull inside of him that draws him back to her as often as possible, and in whichever body he's occupying for the day. He eventually realizes that he has to share his feelings and unique predicament with her if he wants an authentic relationship with her.
Rihannon becomes his only true confidant and the two are faced with several ethical scenarios where they have to prioritize their relationship or the life of whomever A is occupying. A is forced to make a decision that puts his desires second to Rihannon's chance at true happiness.
Levithan, D. (2012). Every Day. New York, NY: Ember.
When I began reading this novel I really had no clue what the plot would entail. As I began reading and realized that this was a fantasy in which a teenager jumps from body to body each day, I immediately put up a wall and made a judgement that I would not like this novel. I know my attitude changed as soon as I put up that wall and I tried not to enjoy the story, but as I kept reading, I started getting sucked into the web created by the main characters. I became invested in the plot and wanted to read to find out what happened next. My wall was crumbling page by page, and in the end, I truly enjoyed this book! I also learned not to let my judgments get in the way of a good book.
I would recommend this novel for mature readers. The plot is engaging, but there is some mature content dealing with drugs, sex, and sexuality. However, it would be appropriate to share excerpts and quotes from the novel with students in upper elementary or middle school.
