Guitar Hero II is a music video game developed by Harmonix and distributed by RedOctane, and is a sequel to Guitar Hero. The game was released first to PlayStation 2 in 2006 but later released for the Xbox 360 in 2007. Guitar Hero II challenges players to recreate the lead guitar portions of many rock music songs using a specially designed guitar-shaped controller, based on either a Gibson SG for the PlayStation 2 version, a Gibson Explorer for the Xbox 360 version, or else a standard console controller. As notes scroll down the screen towards the player, the player must hit both the fret buttons on the guitar controller and the strum bar at the same time to successfully hit the notes. Successfully hitting notes improves the player's performance in the game and also raises their score, while missing notes will reduce the player's performance, and a poor performance may end the song prematurely. Each song can be played at one of four difficulty levels: Easy, Medium, Hard and Expert. These levels reflect the number of fret buttons used and the number and frequency of the notes to be performed.[1]

Most songs in the game are covers of the original songs performed by WaveGroup Sound,[1] but there are some master recordings as indicated below.[7] Each song has a lead guitar track and either a bass or rhythm guitar track that can be played in practice or cooperative modes.[8]

The title is considered a reboot of the series; instead of using a five-button guitar-shaped game controller, the game shipped with a six-button controller, arranged in two rows of three aimed to provide more realistic fingering positions than the five-button controller. The game includes 42 songs on the game's disc, presented in sets using full motion video taken from the first-person perspective of the lead guitarist as the background visuals to create an immersive experience. Guitar Hero Live does not use traditional downloadable content to expand the game and is not backward compatible with previous songs from Guitar Hero games. Instead, the game includes the online Guitar Hero TV (GHTV) mode modeled after music video channels that players can jump in or out of at any time, playing through ongoing songs in a curated fashion. GHTV, through in-game rewards and microtransactions, supports the ability to play any song in the library, perform Premium shows where the newest tracks to GHTV will be found, or even unlock all features for a 24-hour period as part of a Party Pass. Two hundred songs were available at the release of the game, with more added over time, averaging about six brand new songs each week.

FreeStyleGames selected on-disc songs from a wider variety of music genres beyond rock music as to provide challenging guitar tracks for players, while their approach to licensing of songs for GHTV enabled them to attract more musical acts to offer their music. Game reviewers found the on-disc soundtrack to be weak as it focused too much on more recent musical acts, while praising the wider variety across a larger time period that GHTV offered.

Forty-two songs are featured on disc as part of the game's main "GH Live" career mode. Players progress through the career mode by playing one of several continuous sets of three to five songs, with each set presented as part of a concert performance. During a set, the game shows the note highway, the on-screen fretboard which represents the notes the player should play in time to the music, and other gameplay elements. This is shown atop live-action footage taken from the first-person perspective of the lead guitar player of one of several fictional bands, performing on stage and watching the reaction of the crowd and their bandmates. The live-action footage is manipulated by the game to reflect how well the player is performing. Once the player has completed a set, all songs from that set are available in a quickplay mode, allowing the player to perform a single song at a time which they can use to practice the song or attempt to achieve a better score.[1][2]

In selecting the on-disc songs, FreeStyleGames recognized that engaging guitar tracks are not strictly limited to rock music, and included other genres into the mix.[3][4] According to designer Jim Norris, their selection process began with identifying songs that would be expected by players to be on a Guitar Hero title, and then determining which of those songs which they could license. Once they had obtained the license, FreeStyleGames would mark up the song for the note highways and determined how much fun these songs would be to play. Finally, they balanced the song selection in the game to give players a combination of songs they know and those they may not recognize but would be enjoyable.[5]

Reviewers considered the on-disc soundtrack for Guitar Hero Live weak. Griffin McElroy of Polygon found it the "biggest disappointment" of the game given the setlist had mostly songs from 2000 or later, forgoing classic rock songs.[15] GameSpot's Scott Buttersworth stated that many of the on-disc selections are pop songs that "just aren't cut out for Guitar Hero gameplay", as they feature the same repeating guitar riff over and over.[16] Ben Griffin of GamesRadar was more favorable of the on-disc set list, finding that the tracks represented "the music landscape as it is rather than as it was".[17] Chris Carter of Destructoid also appreciated the soundtrack, calling it a "good spread" of songs that can appeal to everyone.[18]

I've just bought guitar hero live for my xbox one, but i didn't know that the sever are down. Is there any chance, in any possible way, to have the opportunity to play not only the offline songs but all the other ones available before the shut down of the servers, for instance the ones in the GHTV??

So I borrowed my neighbor's Xbox for a night and sure enough it worked flawlessly! It wasn't the 4k TV or the disk or any settings in the game. Its the newer black Xbox. It just seems to have issues with guitar hero for some reason.

To find out which tracks are exported to your consoles hard drive you will have to visit the official guitar hero website, also this exportation system works on Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo Wii, but whats different from the Rock Band export system is that the actual disc is not needed as everything is downloaded from the internet (well it is on the Xbox 360 version).

Hi. I am pretty new to guitar hero series. I completed all easy songs with 5 stars, and almost ended career on normal (I just can't beat the very last boss). I was wondering how do u suggest to use the guitar... I mean, now that I have to use the blue button, should I use it with my little finger, or I should just move my hand using only ring finger, middle finger and forefinger?

When I first learned how to play guitar hero (GH2 was my first), I had a lot of problems when I got to medium hitting that blue note.. I always used my pinkie, and after a while, it started getting a little easier to do, and I am very glad I practiced it because when I got to hard it would have been much harder to hit orange's without being able to use my pinkie. My suggestion is that you keep going up difficulty by difficulty, using your pinkie for blue's on medium and continuing to use it on hard and expert, while being able to use it for orange's on hard and expert too. You do need to learn to move your hand too, so just get used to being able to improvise with your fingers hitting notes with fingers you usually wouldn't use. It is really tricky, but you'll get used to it.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is basically an expansion to the popular game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. While both games include a different set list and different venues, gameplay is noticeably similar. The fretboard graphics are the same in both games, and the Star Power and Multiplier tables are as well. However, the visual detail in the guitarists is increased which makes the graphics turn out much better. You can also play many different game modes in the game, such as Career Mode, Co-op Career Mode, Online play, Quickplay, and many others. In Career Mode, you get to follow Aerosmith's career and their rise to fame. You play at real venues and perform Aerosmith songs and songs inspired by Aerosmith so you get to rise to fame as well.

I recently created a Guitar Hero minigame just for my server and it's pretty awesome. The only song I have for it is Bohemian Rhapsody and I'm looking for more songs for it. I can put any song with a .nbs format into the game. I'm looking for someone to create songs for it or already created songs. I would like most of the songs on it to be from guitar hero. If anyone would like to help with this (You will get credit for each song you put together) here is what I require and some info on how it all actually works.

They hold the right color and click to strum. It feels a lot like regular guitar hero accept you don't have to hold down the number slot when you play a note, you just have to hold the right color. I might try to upload a video of me playing it. 2351a5e196
