About
This site is supported by the community members of Guilford, Maryland, and a FB Group of those supporters called Friends of the Guilford History. The mission of the FB Group and this site is historical research, documentation, and preservation of Guilford area history. The Guilford InuDistrict is listed on the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties managed by the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) “a state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past.”
This designation of a Historic District is only the recognition of the special sites in the area, such as the Guilford mill and quarry, as historic areas deserving of research, documentation and preservation. There are still several sites that need to be added to this district. The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) is not a regulatory agency, nor a historical research group, but “a state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past.” It is up to local government and private property owners to make decisions on historic site preservation and/or development. We feel that the public should be notified when historical properties are at risk. Our Friends of the Guilford History group is designed to be an informational and educational resource for all of us working on understanding, documenting and preserving the history of the area.
This site contains photos, stories, documents and links to documents about Guilford. We would appreciate any and all contributions of knowledge for these topics. If you like, we have a Facebook Group that you can check out and join if you are interested.
