BY THE K-POP INSIDERS
Guided Learning (GL) stems from the concept of self-directed learning. In this module, we were given the freedom to work on a project that we are interested in. Hence, we wanted our project to be based on something that we both enjoy while still being able to incorporate the knowledge we gained from our diploma in Psychology. Thus, we chose to explore the social issues and current affairs of K-POP.
To provide some context, the Korean Phenomenon (known as Hallyu) is used to describe the phenomenal growth of Korean culture. The sharp rise in the popularity of K-POP is just one of the many outcomes of Hallyu. Despite K-POP being so well-known and globally loved, it faces much discrimination from people online and offline. This brought us to question the reason behind the prejudice against it.
Hence, we created the K-pop Insiders in an attempt to understand the two sides of K-POP (i.e., the positive and the negative). Although the majority of this subject is independent, students are allowed to collaborate with other students on a project. Upon confirming our project, we were then assigned a Learning Facilitator (LF) to assist us in their learning journey. Additionally, we used the Plan-Perform-Monitor-Reflect (PPMR) cycle throughout our project as a guide to helping us achieve our learning goals, as covered below.
THE GOOD
For the positive aspect of K-POP, we interviewed fans to shine the light on how K-POP had positively impacted them through the stories shared. In-depth research was conducted to comprehend the positive aspects of K-POP as well as the marketing strategies adopted by companies that enable such phenomenon to happen. All these can be found in the videos curated! Head over to 'THE GOOD" to watch them!
THE BAD
For the negative aspect of K-POP, we interviewed non-fans (also known as anti-fans) to understand why they may be against this global phenomenon. Research on psychological concepts and/or social factors was done to understand the hate that the K-POP industry faces. All these can be found in the videos created! Head over to 'THE BAD" to watch them!
Hello!
My name is Lina and I am currently in my second year of studies in Temasek Polytechnic, pursuing a Diploma in Psychology Studies.
I've been following K-POP since 2019 and grew a liking for BTS specifically. I would say that these 7 awesome guys have changed my life positively. They are the comfort I seek for after a long, stressful day in school, people that I look forward to seeing (besides my family and friends of course) even if it's just online, and most certainly, the ones who inspired me to embrace and love myself for who I am <3
With that, I would like to introduce you to other K-POP fans who share the same sentiment as me. On top of that, as a psychie, I was interested to understand the positive aspects of K-POP from a psychological perspective. Hmm... why do K-POP interest us? How do companies strengthen the para social relationship we share with our idols? Thus, I came up with this project to answer my own queries!
p.s. Scroll down and you will meet my co-partner that I'm embarking on this project with! SHE'S AN ARMY TOO :-)
Hi!
My name is Amal and I am also in my second year of studies in Temasek Polytechnic's Diploma in Psychology Studies.
I have been a K-POP fan since it blew up in 2016 and while there are numerous K-POP groups that I admire, I would have to say that my favourite (or ult) group is BTS! I really enjoy their music and find their lyrics inspiring (my favourite comfort songs are Life Goes On and 2!3! :D)
As a fan of K-POP and understanding human behaviours, seeing unjustified discrimination against K-POP online and in real life made me curious to understand anti-fans' attitudes towards it. Hence, as you read on, you'll find me explaining some psychological theories behind the prejudice against K-POP. It might sound scary or boring, but trust me when I say it's not!
