When starting a meditation practice, the first question to ask is if you want it to be guided or unguided. The preference is going to differ from person to person, but before deciding what best suits you, it's worth exploring what each option involves.

When starting out, having an expert lead you through the basic steps of your meditation practice is recommended. Whatever skill we are learning in life, having an experienced teacher we can trust and relate to is important. But when it comes to exploring the intricacies and subtleties of the mind, it is not just important but essential.

DISCLAIMER: This page features general research on meditation, and any study using the Headspace app is noted as such. The Headspace science team is committed to conducting research on our product to ensure it delivers benefits to our users. While our research is in progress, it's important to note that Headspace is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition.

Research (conducted in third-party studies) shows that guided digital meditations can be just as effective as in-person meditation classes for some people. People who meditated with apps like Headspace showed significant improvements in well-being and job strain. For some people, building a consistent meditation habit becomes easier when the tools for meditating exist in an easy-to-grab app; with an app, you can fit meditation into any schedule or space.

Lil Jon spoke with Rascoe on Weekend Edition Sunday about maturing in music, focusing on health and finding a balance between the extreme ends of the volume knob. Hear their conversation at the audio link, and read an edited transcript below.

Your music is really high energy, and you can tell how it affects people's moods: I remember, back in the day, if you played a song like "Head Bussa," the women would leave the dance floor because the men would go so crazy. But now, you are obviously doing very calming sounds for this meditation album. Can you talk to me about how you use sound to bring out different emotions?

Meditation is a mind and body practice that can help you focus on your breath, find clarity, develop concentration, and enhance emotional positivity, which allows you to remain in the present moment. Meditation focuses on the interactions among the brain, mind, body, and behavior. The benefits of meditation can come from practicing only a few minutes a day.

With a guided meditation, you listen to narration from an instructor or guide (usually with accompanying soothing sounds, like waves) to help you focus while you are meditating.

Many guided meditation classes that made it into our top picks are available for free, but services like Headspace and Calm offer memberships in addition to free trials. The cost of in-person classes can range from $20 to $150, with an average of around $55 to $60 per class. This depends on the length of the meditation and the experience of the instructor. You can also download meditation apps, which range from free to $15 per month.

The advantage of guided meditations is that the narrator or teacher walks you through how to meditate, what to expect from your mind and body, and how you can apply what you learned in the meditation to your life. If your mind tends to wander during meditation, the guidance of an experienced teacher can help you focus and bring you back to the present moment. Meditation on your own is a good idea once you've done a few guided meditations, and don't need a guide to help get you to a focused place.

RASCOE: Yes, that is the same person (laughter). It's rapper and DJ Lil John, and he now wants you to turn it way down. His latest project is a guided meditation album called "Total Meditation." And Lil Jon joins me now. Welcome to the show.

LIL JON: Yeah, it was anxiety and a little stress from a lot hitting me at the same time, turning 50, looking at my life, looking at my, you know, marriage and a lot of things and dealing with addressing and trying to move on and get through those things. And I would meditate, you know, before I go on stage, or here and there, I take a little - you know, a little breath here, or I just take some time for myself. But I really found at this particular point in my life, I really need to go into it a little deeper. And so I would meditate every day, and I would say my affirmations every day, and all of that would quiet me, calm those crazy thoughts and emotions that I would have, and calm me and give me some peace.

LIL JON: Dancing is therapeutic, as well. It's good for the soul, good for the mind. All of that is good. Connecting with others is good for the mind, body and soul. All of that is great. So it works out for me. You know, like, I can still do it. And I'm, I'm spreading good energy to people. I'm giving them good times with the meditation and with the club.

LIL JON: Yeah, man up. So it's like with this album, it's showing, like, hey, listen to this meditation. It'll help to give you a different perspective on things. It'll calm you. And try it with an open mind and see how it helps.

Meditation has been around for thousands of years. Early meditation was meant to help deepen understanding of the sacred and mystical forces of life. These days, meditation is most often used to relax and lower stress.

Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that can benefit your emotional well-being and your overall health. You also can use it to relax and cope with stress by focusing on something that calms you. Meditation can help you learn to stay centered and keep inner peace.

Be sure to talk to your healthcare professional about the pros and cons of using meditation if you have any of these or other health conditions. Sometimes, meditation might worsen symptoms linked to some mental health conditions.

Meditation is an umbrella term for the many ways to get to a relaxed state. There are many types of meditation and ways to relax that use parts of meditation. All share the same goal of gaining inner peace.

Each type of meditation may include certain features to help you meditate. These may vary depending on whose guidance you follow or who's teaching a class. Some of the most common features in meditation include:

A quiet setting. If you're a beginner, meditation may be easier if you're in a quiet spot. Aim to have fewer things that can distract you, including no television, computers or cellphones.

As you get more skilled at meditation, you may be able to do it anywhere. This includes high-stress places, such as a traffic jam, a stressful work meeting or a long line at the grocery store. This is when you can get the most out of meditation.

Don't let the thought of meditating the "right" way add to your stress. If you choose to, you can attend special meditation centers or group classes led by trained instructors. But you also can practice meditation easily on your own. There are apps to use too.

And you can make meditation as formal or informal as you like. Some people build meditation into their daily routine. For example, they may start and end each day with an hour of meditation. But all you really need is a few minutes a day for meditation.

It's common for your mind to wander during meditation, no matter how long you've been practicing meditation. If you're meditating to calm your mind and your mind wanders, slowly return to what you're focusing on.

Try out ways to meditate to find out what types of meditation work best for you and what you enjoy doing. Adapt meditation to your needs as you go. Remember, there's no right way or wrong way to meditate. What matters is that meditation helps you reduce your stress and feel better overall.

When sim leads a guided meditation after the icon finishes blinking the meditation doesn't start, instead every one gets up and leaves and the sim is not paid. She lead four different guided meditations, the first one showed up, the second no one showed up and the third and fourth times three sims showed up. The activity did not complete and the sim was not paid.

I am having the same problem as troshalom: the "lead guided meditation" or "host guided meditation" selections do not work. My sim can initiate guided meditations, and participants arrive on their own or after being invited to join - but once the wait time for the meditation ends and the actual meditation class is supposed to start, all sims get up and leave, including my own. The activity seems to cancel itself for no reason. My sim is level 10 max wellness, I have tried rearranging the meditation room to ensure nothing is blocking/interrupting the class, even created a new meditation room from scratch. I'm now going to try on another spa lot and hope for the best. Can you recommend anything? thanks!

Instead of looking outside yourself for answers, look within! Take time to reflect upon this past year, cherish your learnings, and meditate on what is next for you! As you wave goodbye to old habits and situations that no longer serve you, you create space for the new!

The next phase of our guided meditation will help you map out practical steps to get you started on your journey of achieving one (just one!) of the most important things for you to accomplish this year. Be sure to join us in again in December for a reappraisal.

There are specific courses that teach stress relief meditation. The best-known is MBSR, the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program created by modern mindfulness pioneer Jon Kabat-Zinn for the University of Massachusetts Medical School almost forty years ago. His program is now taught worldwide in a variety of settings from corporations to clinical environments to prisons. 0852c4b9a8
